Seth Rogen And Barbara Streisand Prepare For The 'Guilt Trip'

Though the idea of pairing Seth Rogen with Barbara Streisand might at first glance seem like a strange one, it turns out that these two are actually a match made in heaven. The duo plays a mother and son in the new comedy "The Guilt Trip," and the first clip from the film proves that [...]

Fox 21 pays $6 million for Renee Zellweger 'Cinnamon Girl' pilot for Lifetime

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - After an intense bidding war, Fox 21 has closed a deal to produce Renee Zellweger's "Cinnamon Girl" TV pilot for Lifetime, with a budget around $6 million, described as the highest cost ever for a basic cable pilot.

Lifetime has licensed the rights for U.S. television, and will pay about half of the production cost.

A spokesman for the studio said that Fox 21's Bert Salke stepped up and won the project on Friday afternoon.

An individual close to the deal has told TheWrap that six studios were once in the bidding for the music-themed series.

Others bidding for producing rights included Warner Horizon Television and Universal Cable Productions. Only UCP and Fox 21 were left in the running on Friday.

A Lifetime executive reached by TheWrap disputed the $6 million figure but could offer no specifics.

Lifetime bought the drama pilot, which Zellweger co-created and co-wrote, and risked a $600,000 penalty if they did not make it, the individual said.

Lifetime chief Nancy Dubuc was convinced the show could become a signature for the network, similar to "Mad Men" on AMC or "Glee" on Fox.

Lifetime reportedly considered producing it and retaining the ownership. But given the setting of 1960's Los Angeles and the theme - music - they decided to find a studio to produce the project and to distribute it internationally.

The show is expected to find and create ingenue musical stars similar to what "Glee" and "American Idol" have done. The producers will retain multiple rights over licensing, music sales and concert appearances for the show's talent.

Zellweger co-created "Cinnamon Girl" with Anthony Tambakis ("Warrior"). The story combines Zellwegger's own journey from Texas to Hollywood, and Tambakis' interest in the late 1960's music and movie scene around Laurel Canyon and New Hollywood.

The story revolves around four girls and explores their lives at this turning point in cultural history. Allie MacDonald, Alexis Knapp, Brooke Anne Smith, Jade Bartlett and Sebastian Piggott signed on to the project earlier this month.

CAA represented Zellweger and steered the deal.

(AP) ? A Harvard-educated biologist was sentenced to life in prison without parole Monday after being convicted of going on a shooting rampage during a faculty meeting at an Alabama university, killing three colleagues and wounding three others in 2010.

The jury deliberated for about 20 minutes before convicting Amy Bishop. The former professor at the University of Alabama in Huntsville showed no reaction as the verdict was read. She did not speak in court, but her attorney said she has often expressed great remorse for the victims and their families.

"She is shattered beyond belief," attorney Roy Miller said.

Bishop avoided a death sentence by pleading guilty earlier this month to the shootings on Feb. 12, 2010. Before the guilty plea ? which she signed with a barely legible scrawl ? her attorneys had said they planned to use an insanity defense.

However, she was still required to have a brief trial because she admitted to a capital murder charge.

And she still could face a trial in Massachusetts, where she is charged in the 1986 killing of her 18-year-old brother. Seth Bishop's death had been ruled an accident after Amy Bishop told investigators she shot him in the family's Braintree home as she tried to unload her father's gun. But the Alabama shootings prompted a new investigation and charges. David Traub, a spokesman for Norfolk District Attorney Michael Morrissey in Massachusetts, said Monday evening that Morrissey expects to make an announcement by the end of the week.

Bishop killed her boss, biology department chairman Gopi Padila, plus professors Maria Ragland Davis and Adriel Johnson. Associate professor Joseph Leahy, staff aide Stephanie Monticciolo and assistant professor Luis Cruz-Vera were shot and wounded.

Leahy said he was satisfied with the verdict and life sentence, but no amount of remorse by Bishop could change what she'd done.

"She has just sort of ceased to exist for me," he told reporters after the brief trial.

A police investigator testified that Bishop initially denied having anything to do with the rampage. And during the trial, Bishop shook her head anytime the judge or prosecutors described the killings as intentional.

District Attorney Rob Broussard said Bishop's reaction in court didn't make sense.

"You can't take a loaded 9 mm and hold it inches away from human beings' heads and tell me you didn't mean to do that," said Broussard.

Investigator Charlie Gray also said police believe Bishop opened fire during the faculty meeting because she was angry over being denied tenure, which effectively ended her career at the University of Alabama in Huntsville.

"She would say, 'It didn't happen. I wasn't there. It wasn't me,'" Gray said.

Bishop wore a red jail uniform in court and was shackled at the feet, seated between two attorneys at the defense table.

Also in court, sitting behind prosecutors, were relatives of the people killed in the rampage.

The only other witness to testify was Debra Moriarity, now the chairman of biological sciences at UAH. She testified about how a routine Friday afternoon faculty meeting turned into a scene of carnage with no warning.

Moriarty testified that Amy Bishop sat unusually silent during the nearly hourlong faculty meeting, during which discussions ran from a spring open house to plans for the following fall. People were seated around a crowded conference table in a small room on a chilly, overcast day, she said.

Moriarity said she glanced down at a piece of paper on the table. "And there was a loud bang," she said.

Moriarity said more shots followed in quick succession without Bishop ever saying a word. Moriarity said she was looking directly at Bishop when she shot professor Maria Ragland Davis, who was killed instantly while still seated at the table.

Moriarity said she dove under the table for safety and tried to grab Bishop's legs, but the woman stepped out of her grasp. "I was saying, 'Stop, Amy, stop. Don't do this. I've helped you before, I'll help you again.'"

Moriarity said Bishop pointed the gun at her and pulled the trigger, but nothing happened. She said Bishop continued trying to shoot her in a hall outside, but the gun had jammed.

Ezine Publishing For Profit | Find New Articles at Just Articles Article ...

Article by Steve Duval

More and more businesses are expanding into specialized areas, this is creating a greater need for information in the form of ezine publishing. Pretty much any area of endeavor, whether it is a hobby, business or educational pursuit, requires good information. It is the lifeblood for success.

Ezine publishing fills this need and also supplies internet marketers with avenues for making profit. Writing and producing a newsletter can lead to high earning potential. With as few as a thousand subscribers, the profits can be impressive.

There are no set rules for ezine publishing or creating a newsletter but with a little investigation into this market and a bit of caution in your approach, your income can increase every month.

It is not necessary to be a business consultant or stock market insider in order to create a newsletter about that topic. Ezine publishing can cater to many types of activities; sports, hobby crafting, health, home improvement and ways of making money.

Probably the biggest key to success in ezine publishing is to do plenty of research into the people who make up the market of your likely subscribers. Think about the hobbies and interests that you are involved in that could translate into an income producing newsletter. Interview friends, relatives and associates who are skilled in a particular area and use their expertise to build good content.

A successful newsletter will be written about a single subject, it will be timely and contain content of high quality. Add a resource box to the end of each newsletter and make sure the report has value to the readers in your chosen market. Keep the resource box humble, overt selling will not gain as many customers as a softer approach.

Each report should contain a concise statement from someone who is an expert or at least completely familiar with the specialized field. No overt advertising should be included, only content-rich, high quality material. The information should be current and unique, readers should not be able to find this material anywhere else. Readers need to feel they are getting inside information, a hot tip, news scoop or a story that is fresh and new.

Ezine publishing should not be aimed for mass market appeal, instead it should be laser targeted toward the select group of people most likely to be interested in any particular field.

Market saturation should not be a concern even with all the media available. There is plenty of general information on most any subject, good ezine publishing will present a more specialized viewpoint.

Focusing a newsletter on success and motivation with plenty of enthusiasm for the subject is the key to staying ahead of the competition. Loyal subscribers expect superior knowledge, and will be more likely to purchase a recommended product or service.

Internet marketers depend on their subscribers for income, ezine publishing that provides outstanding value will not only create a solid customer base, but happy customers will always tell a friend and this generates more website traffic.

Google-owned Motorola mocks Apple Maps app in new ad

Google has used its Motorola smartphone brand to poke fun at the ongoing Apple Maps debacle.

A new advertisement for the Motorola Droid Razr M depicts the smartphone next to the iPhone 5. The Android device shows Google Maps while the Apple smartphone features the new Maps app on screen.

While the Razr M displays a detailed satellite image of 315 E 15th Street in downtown Manhattan in Google Maps, the iPhone 5 with Maps shows the same street, appearing as an almost barren stretch of road.

The ad's caption reads: "The real world that's fit for your hands," while the wording underneath the iPhone 5, simply reads "#iLost'

Overshadowed

The Motorola Mobility Twitter account posted the posted the ad late on Friday, while the Maps mess was busy overshadowing iPhone 5 launch day. Moto has continued to push the #iLost hashtag in tweets since.

Google, of course, will probably be feeling pretty smug right now; like a jilted lover who's just seen their ex arm-in-arm with a dramatically less desirable new partner.

Google Maps was shelved by Apple for a homegrown solution for iOS 6. Apple has pleaded for patience as as it seeks to improve the new tech with the addition of user data.

Going Social Inside-Out at Bluewolf | Social Media Today

Communicating person-to-person via the Internet has similarities to learning a new language and getting used to a strange culture. It doesn't come naturally to everyone, especially in the context of business relationships. There's a certain amount of fear in taking the social step, so it makes sense that prior to engaging clients and customers, employees of a company should practice internally, where the benefits of social can open doors to new forms of collaboration.?

While at Dreamforce 2012 I had the opportunity to talk with Natasha Oxenburgh of Bluewolf, a consultancy based in San Francisco. Natasha is Bluewolf's Social Programs Manager.

Last year Bluewolf recognized that social media and interaction were evolving into an essential business practice and skill set, with respect to their client offerings. It was important to the company that all of its employees learn and understand how to use social tools effectively. Some employees were already fluent in social practice while others had managed to avoid much involvement with the technologies and skills that, until recently, had been regarded as optional.

The challenge - as it is in many businesses of all sizes - was to bring everyone in Bluewolf up to speed in a way that was non-threatening and engaging. It's always been the case that some people smoothly adopt social media and some hold back out of professional anxiety - their possible embarrassment or loss of status within the organization.

ImageNatasha, who came on board at Bluewolf 18 months ago, manages Bluewolf's website content and has been driving this internal change management campaign around social collaboration. She proposed a learning and gamification program that offered incentives for taking steps into the internal social environment of the company.

As Natasha said, "Our Going Social program was started at the beginning of this year with two goals. One was to increase internal collaboration. More importantly it was about getting our employee base engaged. Engaged employees increase customer engagement."

The goal for each employee was to build a rich professional profile, accessible by all employees and managers, that would answer the question, "Who is this person and what should I know about her or him?"

"If we turn our employees into external thought leaders it raises the value of our brand as well as their personal brands," Natasha said, "We achieved buy-in from employees by helping them develop their own personal brands."

What did employees have to gain by participating? Natasha called it the WIIFM - What's In It For Me - question. The answer was, "Getting known internally, improving your reputation, gaining visibility."

The Going Social team asked employees-in-training, "What do you want to be known for?" The personal branding would serve the purpose of fulfilling that wish.

Going Social began with a 30-day case study using two of Bluewolf's senior consultants. In order to become better known in the company, each consultant set up a personal blog, engaged with communities outside of the company, shared their knowledge within the company and kept video diaries. Their profiles became models for the rest of the employees.

As SMBs and enterprise level companies confront the stark realities of social competency as a competitive factor, they will need to develop their own versions of Going Social - moving their activities into the increasingly social marketplace. Though the challenges to corporate cultures are many, the vast majority of businesses have no choice but to adapt.

Easy Crockpot Recipes for College Students - The Sweets Life

When I heard my college-aged brother Quinn was looking for some easy recipes to make, my mind first went to the crockpot. I knew if he could get his hands on a crockpot, meal prep would be infinitely easier for him. I appreciate the crockpot for its virtually hands free cooking, ideal on evenings I'm working late or have something else going on. The same can be said for Quinn, who has basketball practice on top of classes and working.

I have quite an archive of crockpot recipes here on the blog, but I picked out a few that I thought would be particularly easy / Quinn-approved! Here you go buddy, cooking doesn't get much easier than this!

Slowcooker BBQ Beer Chicken?--All college students have beer on hand, right?! This is literally a dump it and forget about it recipe. Quinn had this a few times while living here this summer and so I already know this one is a hit! Crockpot Buffalo Chicken Chili-Quinn goes to school in Minnesota. Have you ever experienced a Minnesota winter? I made the mistake of visiting Quinn last December and learned my lesson! They need all the heat they can get out there and this spicy chili fits the bill! Slow Cooker French Dip Sandwiches-This was another recipe I made when Quinn was around this summer and it got two thumbs up...particularly because we really liked to say "au jus". Now you can make it yourself Q! Shredded Beef Sandwiches-You can't get much easier than this--only 4 ingredients! This was one of my mom's staple recipes when we were growing up and it screams "comfort food" to me. I myself will be making this this winter (and taking a better picture!). Slow Cooker Orange Chicken-Another recipe with minimal ingredients! Grab a bag of instant rice and this meal is pretty much complete! Salsa Chicken and Black Bean Soup-You know a meal is good when it's made more than once in our household and this one has been made multiple times! Like all of the others, the ingredient list is relatively short and prep work is pretty much nothing!

Any other crockpot recipes to share with Quinn (and other college students, and busy people, for that matter!)? Leave a link!

2013 Honda Insight Hybrid Combines ... - Auto industry news

The 2013 Honda Insight provides a roomy interior, versatile hatchback design, fun-to-drive nature and an award-winning low cost of ownership. The Honda Insight received a 2012 Total Cost of Ownership Award from Kelley Blue Book?s kbb.com, with a key contributor being the 5-door Insight?s impressive city/highway/combined EPA fuel economy rating2of 41/44/42 mpg.

2013 Honda Insight

After extensive changes for 2012 including updated exterior styling, an enhanced interior, additional features on selected models, and an EPA fuel economy-ratingimprovement, the Insight continues unchanged for 2013. The 2013 Honda Insight remains the most affordable hybrid for sale in the U.S., and pricing is unchanged for 2013, starting at $18,500. The 2013 Insight goes on sale September 18.

The 2013 Insight is offered in three models. The value-oriented base model is simply designated as Insight, and is well equipped with a 160-watt audio system, automatic climate control, power windows, and more. The Insight LX adds a USB audio interface, cruise control, armrest console, floor mats, security system and steering-wheel mounted audio controls. The Insight EX adds alloy wheels, six-speaker audio system, heated side mirrors with integrated turn signals, Bluetooth HandsFreeLink, automatic headlights and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. The Insight EX is also available with the Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System with voice recognition and rearview camera.

Powertrain
A Honda Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) system powers the Insight. Comprised of a 1.3-liter i?VTEC gasoline 4-cylinder engine and a 10-kilowatt electric motor, the combination develops 98 horsepower at 5800 rpm and 123 lb-ft. of torque at 1000-1700 rpm. To maximize fuel efficiency, friction-reducing measures are used throughout the engine and the transmission.

Fully automatic in operation, the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) is an advanced unit that substitutes the gears found in more traditional transmissions and replaces them with a metal push-belt running between a pair of variable-width pulleys. Combined with the Drive-by-Wire throttle system, the CVT constantly adjusts to provide the most efficient drive ratio possible depending on torque load. Honda?s CVT provides better fuel efficiency and acceleration when compared to a conventional transmission. On EX models, the steering wheel includes paddle shifters, which allow manually shifting though a range of seven fixed ratios for a sporty driving experience.

The Insight comes equipped with fuel-efficiency enhancement technology called Eco Assist. A push of the dash-mounted ECON button modifies throttle control, CVT operation, idle-stop duration, air conditioning and cruise-control operation (if so equipped) to minimize energy use and increase fuel efficiency. A sophisticated feedback system uses ambient color behind the speedometer to indicate overall driving efficiency. An Eco Display provides feedback on braking and acceleration. Plus, Eco Score provides ongoing support of an efficient driving style.

Body
The Insight was given significant updates for the 2012 model year, including a more distinctive grille design with a blue accent bar representing the Insight?s high-tech hybrid identity. To improve aerodynamic performance, the strakes ahead of the front wheels were extended by 0.4 inches to better direct air around the front tires. The shape of the engine bay underbody cover was also fine-tuned, and air diffusers were added under the rear bumper to smooth airflow behind the vehicle. The changes combined to net a 2-percent increase in aerodynamic performance.

Chassis
The Insight rides on MacPherson strut front suspension, combined with a torsion-beam rear suspension that helps maximize interior space. Electric power-assisted rack-and-pinion power steering (EPS) offers predictable and linear steering feel, while also saving fuel compared to traditional hydraulic systems that put a greater load on the engine. With its 36.1-foot turning diameter, the Insight offers good maneuverability in congested urban settings. Insight and Insight LX models have 15-inch stamped-steel wheels with wheel covers and the Insight EX has 15-inch alloy wheels.

Interior
The Insight?s roomy interior offers comfortable seating for up to five passengers. Versatility is a key Insight strong point, and the 60/40 split rear seatbacks fold down to create a large 31.5 cubic-foot cargo space and make it easy to mix passengers and cargo.

Advanced instrumentation gives the Insight an upscale look, and provides the driver with key information at a glance. A large digital speed display is positioned high in the instrument cluster, close to the driver?s sightline and easy to see. The convenient Multi-Information Display (MID) allows quick access to a range of useful information with convenient steering-wheel mounted controls. Automatic climate control is standard on all grades. The Insight LX has premium seat fabric, while the Insight EX is upholstered with a combination of synthetic leather and premium fabric.

Available on Insight EX models, the Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System with voice recognition4 includes a rearview camera and provides routing and guidance to individual addresses and more than 7-million points of interest within the continental United States. With its 16-GB memory system, it offers fast route calculation and includes FM traffic, a subscription-free service that alerts drivers to traffic conditions.

Safety
Standard safety features on all Insight models include dual-stage, multiple-threshold front airbags, front-side airbags with a passenger-side Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS), side-curtain airbag system, anti-lock brakes with electronic brake distribution (EBD), driver?s and front-passenger?s active head restraints, and a front body structure designed to help mitigate pedestrian injuries. The Insight also features Honda?s Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure, which provides improved occupant protection and crash compatibility between vehicles of different sizes and ride heights in frontal crashes.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) named the Insight a ?2012 Top Safety Pick.? IIHS rates vehicles on performance in front and side crash tests, a rollover test, and evaluations of seat/head restraints for protection against neck injuries in rear impacts. To earn a 2012 Top Safety Pick rating, a vehicle must have good results (the highest possible) in all four Institute tests.

Manufacturing and Awards
The Insight is manufactured by Honda in Suzuka, Japan. Though the Insight features advanced hybrid technology, that doesn?t mean it takes a lot of money to buy or maintain one. The Honda Insight received a 2012 Total Cost of Ownership Award from Kelley Blue Book?s kbb.com. With its low starting price, excellent fuel mileage and exceptional Honda reliability, the Insight is a great value.

Sunrise Mayor: Toughen Daycare Center Law To Require More Disclosure To Parents

By Michael J. Ryan, Mayor Of Sunrise

At four-years-old,?Jordan Coleman?was old enough to know something wasn?t right, but not old enough to protect himself.

It was a hot August afternoon in Florida.? Maybe he was asleep when the ?staff? of a Sunrise daycare center forgot him in the van.? If so, he likely woke sweaty and to a stifling, choking heat.? Alone.? No one else in the van.? Panic would have set in.

Jordan likely would have stopped sweating as the natural defenses meant to cool his body began to fail.? Hyperventilating, he would have progressed to confusion, and ultimately unconsciousness.

How long did it take? What were the final moments like before he slipped into unconsciousness? ?As a loving son, did he cry out to his Mother?

Want To Win When You Play Video Games? Read This Advice ...

If you really find this article helpful Give it a PLUS from below and help us to spread it.

Try to avoid buying new games for consoles and personal computers. The typical starting price is sixty dollars, but often drops to fifty dollars within a few weeks or months. The longer you wait to buy a title, the cheaper it is going to be for you to get the same game.

When choosing video games for your children, it is vital to do a small research first. Make use of the rating symbols on the front of the packaging, and the game descriptions on the back. But, you can also gain valuable information by talking to other kids, parents and checking out online forums to get real answers about appropriate content.

If as a parent you are concerned with video game content, control what downloadable mods are placed in the game. These downloadable mods are normally made by players, not the video game companies, so there is no rating system. What you thought was a relatively un-risky game can turn a lot worse with one of these mods.

Most kids delight in gaming, even children as young as preschoolers. As a parent, it is vital that you choose games that are both stimulating and educational for your preschooler. When your child is playing a game, sit beside your child and help guide them through the game. By doing this, the game will have more educational value and not just be a form of entertainment to keep the child busy while you do other things.

Practice makes perfect! The more you play a game, the better you?ll be. The more walkthroughs you read, the better prepared you?ll be for each level. Watch videos of others playing, or read posts about their experiences, and you?ll find you quickly master games with small effort and frustration.

Get up and take a break during marathon gaming sessions. Just push the pause button or wait until you?ve finished a level, and then get up and walk around. Take about five to 10 minutes resting your eyes and hands, and then you can get back to the game where you left off.

If you are a gamer, you already know that video gaming can be a pretty expensive leisure activity. If you want to buy the latest and greatest new game, it will usually cost you at least $50 or $60. Before you sink that kind of money in a new game, do your research and check out several reviews on this new game. Be sure it is one that will provide you with countless hours of pleasure before you buy it.

Before you choose that you?ve gotten all there is to get out of a particular video game, take a look at the extra content that?s available right in the game. Many modern games offer alternative modes of play or bonus content that are only available after you?ve made considerable progress in the main game. You may learn many hours of fun left in a game you thought you were finished with!

As a parent, limit your child?s time playing video games. While video game playing in and of itself is not terrible, it is not particularly excellent for your child to play hours upon hours of games. Set a timer for your child to help limit his game playing time.

If you want to find a excellent video game for your child, the best way to start is with what he or she likes. Also, you can reckon about what they may need more of. For example, if your child is having distress spelling, seek out a game that helps with that.

Make sure the games you buy your children are age appropriate. There are brilliant video games on the market that improve a child?s memory and even help them learn school subjects. In addition, these games are fun. But smaller children should not play extremely violent games. Studies show these games dull children to the effects and consequences of violence in real life.

To game comfortably and avoid damaging your body during repetitive game-play, invest in the best accessories. Daytrading, Stock Trading, Investing and Forex Trading ? Is There A ...

Daytrading is carried out by day traders who swiftly purchase and sell stocks over a single day period in the expectation that for the brief period over which they hold the stocks ( starting from just one or two seconds to a few hours ) the worth may continue to climb or fall so permitting day traders to secure fast profits. What's daytrading? Daytrading is an intensely dangerous way of making an investment in the stockmarket. How does one make profits? The strategy of selling and buying stocks over a really brief time period can create big losses or profits for the trader in just two minutes or hours. However daytrading has become an inflating popular sort of trading lately because of the web and increased access to info. Stocks pick software has helped numerous traders make a ton of money on some hot selections, but because it's been so worthwhile for so many traders this has led several publishers to throw together ineffectual pickers of their own and pass them off as cash earners with fascinating branding and sites. A refund guarantee separates the credible from the dodgy publishers out there, so be certain that it comes attached. This is easy to do and does not cost any investing cash to figure out how well its picks do as you can simply get the programme, receive a few picks, then sight follow their performances in the market. This also gives you the chance to test the stocks pick programme first-hand if you wish.

A good rough rule is to focus on momentum. When it is slowing down and you detect that there are not as many consumers, that's when you wish to sell. Stock option daytrading isn?t right for everybody so do not feel coerced into it. Don?t hold out thinking you can squeeze bigger profits out of it or you might finish up losing money in the final analysis. Yet if you're impressed by it, then take a while to find out about stockmarket trading to see what it can do for you! Did you miss-read the market? Was there something that you didn't check? Did you take the trade although it did not meet your trade factors? Or, was the trade set-up valid, it just failed to work out? Is there something about your trading behaviour that must be addressed? Whatever it is, you have got an occasion to understand something new, and that's valuable! Take fast remedial action : Have you got to tweak your trade set up? Is there a rule for private discipline required? Whatever you have learned, take rapid action.

Keep your head and disposition right : You have a choice about approach. You can accept the loss as an inescapable part of trading and be thankful you can learn a little from it, or you can enter a negative, downward spiral of feeling bad, getting down on yourself, and making yourself feel more sad. Follow the helpful steps revealed here and stay above all this. Remember, trading has a base in chances : Each trade set-up has a likelihood of winning and a chance for loss. Over a big number of trades, a set-up with an edge will be rewarding. If you are new to stock exchange day-trading these are some things to help begin. Day-trading is to all intents and purposes the method of purchasing stocks for a short term, with the expectation of capitalizing on the market short term upward swing. You really should know that the most prosperous stock exchange backers are people who put their cash on the long run. Sadly , plenty of day traders lose a good sum of money from this kind of trading due to their thoughtlessness and their disability to govern their feelings.

Chinese delegates learn about Henry?s emergency operations

Special Photo A delegation from the People?s Republic of China came to Henry County this week to learn about emergency operations in the area.

McDONOUGH ? Henry County got a feather in its cap this week when Chinese officials visited the area to learn about strategies for handling emergencies.

The county hosted 17 delegates from the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region from the People?s Republic of China Thursday. The group, led by Jiang Hong, wanted to gauge how emergency communications are addressed at the federal, state and local levels, said county spokeswoman Julie Hoover-Ernst.

?Their first stop in the state was to the Georgia State Operations Center in Atlanta where they attended a lecture and tour of the 24-hour Communications Center,? she said. ?Next, the delegation made a stop in Henry County to tour the new Emergency Operations Center.?

Henry?s Emergency Management Director Don Ash was among those who met with the Chinese delegates. He said the event was part of a statewide effort by the Georgia Emergency Management Agency to provide education on disaster preparedness.

?GEMA has asked to partner with us as they bring different dignitaries to our community to show them how we manage disasters,? said Ash.

Henry has played host in recent years for similar tours by delegations from Thailand, the Republic of Georgia, South Korea, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Ash said he is grateful for the support he has received at the state level in promoting his department?s programs.

?It lets us know we?re doing a good job for how we manage a disaster,? he said.

Hoover-Ernst said the tours resulted in part from Henry?s reputation for outstanding emergency preparedness stemming from how officials handled aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

Other county leaders who welcomed the Chinese delegates to the area included Henry fire Chief Bill Lacy and police Chief Keith Nichols. Hoover-Ernst said the delegates wanted to know more about how to improve emergency communications.

?According to Hong, China still maintains separate phone numbers for fire, police and ambulance assistance, so the delegates are particularly interested in learning more about the efficiencies of 911 communications,? she said.

Chinese government officials also expressed interest in how the community handles earthquakes, hurricanes and forest fires, said Hoover-Ernst.

Growing Family Trees and English - Australian Vegetables: Doesn't ...

Yes, doesn't time fly.

We have now been here in Australia for just over six months and lots of things have happened since we arrived in Perth but firstly, I would just like to thank everyone who sent cards, telephoned, text, emailed, facebooked recently to wish Ryan and myself a happy birthday.
Also thank you to everyone who wished Sue and myself a happy 17 years wedding anniversary, yes, doesn't time fly.

So what Blog news can I give you about the Nickisson family now?

1)??New Australian roots: We move into our new home in October.

2)??Old Australian roots: The first Nickisson's to arrive in Australia from my Family Tree. The story continues:

3)??Growing Australian roots: Including how the allotment is going in England

Doesn't time fly: When a clock is hungry does it go back four seconds???

1) New Australian Roots.

We have now bought our first home in Australia.

We will be moving into 53 Tea Tree Way around the 5th/6th of October and the shopping has begun. It is really exciting to start completely fresh and buy new furniture, electrical equipment,?etc.

The time living with Dean & Rachel has been fantastic and really worked out very well but nine people living in one house!!!

I think it's time to give them back their home.

This link will give you a tour of our new home:
?For Sale : 53 Tea Tree Way Thornlie: Ideal Location: LJ Hooker Thornlie

Our individual lives have continued along the same pattern as I have mentioned in my previous Blogs. Sue has now completed her 3 months probation and is now a permanent employee.

We cannot wait to move into our new home.

Did you know?
Nearly all Australian houses do not have letter boxes in their front doors? As you can see from the above photo, the postboxes are usually situated somewhere in the front garden and the variety and styles of? the postboxes can be unusual.
?????????????????????

And the post is delivered by a motorbike rider.

More variety of ?postboxes in the next Blog.

2)??Old Australian roots:?The first Nickisson's to arrive in Australia from my Family Tree.

As I mentioned in my last Blog, my Great Great ?Grandfather's brother, William Nickisson, died and his widow (Mary Ann Parkes) emigrated to Queensland, Australia with her children (Alfred Parkes Nickisson, Frederick Nickisson and Louisa Nickisson).?Their other daughter (Elizabeth Nickisson) had already emigrated in 1873 along with her husband (Carl Casper Franklin).
Louisa Nickisson died shortly after arriving in Queensland and then Mary Ann and Frederick returned to England from Victoria in 1879.

So what happened to Elizabeth Nickisson, now Elizabeth Franklin, and Alfred Parkes Nickisson?

Elizabeth Nickisson (1847-1891):
Elizabeth was born in Birmingham in 1847 and continued to live there and married Carl Casper Franklin in 1871. They had a child, Carl Frederick Franklin in 1872 and then emigrated to Australia in 1873. They left London on the 1st of February on the clipper ship 'Storm King' and arrived at Moreton Bay, Queensland on the 3rd of May.
They had two other children whilst living in Queensland, Mary Louisa Franklin and William Edward Franklin, they then moved to Rockhampton, New South Wales sometime after 1876 where they had another daughter Ellen Elizabeth Franklin.
Elizabeth Franklin (nee Nickisson) died in 1891 in Woolahra, Sydney, NSW.
Carl Casper Franklin (c1847-?):
I have no information about Carl Casper in the earlier years, was he born in England or travelled back from Australia, in fact was his name Carl or Charles? On the Marriage Registration Doc. and the Birth/Christening Record of their first child, it shows the name as Carl Casper, but on the Birth Records for the children born in Australia, they?show the name as Charles or Charles Casper?
After the birth of his children, I have not been able to find any more information about Carl (Charles) Casper Franklin.

Does anyone out there know any more?

Children:
Carl Frederick Franklin (1872-1936):
Born in Birmingham and emigrated to Queensland, Australia in 1873. Little more is known about Carl Frederick other than he lived in Old Farm Road, Helensburgh, New South Wales, around the 1930s, (Australian Electoral Rolls) where he worked as a miner until he died in 1936.

Does anyone out there know any more?

Mary Louisa Franklin (1874-1875):
Born and died in Queensland, Australia, just one year old.

William Edward Franklin (1876-1937):
William Edward followed very much in his older brother Carl Frederick's footsteps. Born in Queensland, Australia, little more is known until he appears living in Station Road, Helensburgh, New South Wales, around the 1930s, (Australia Electoral Rolls) where he also worked as a miner until his death in 1937.

Does anyone out there know any more?

Ellen Elizabeth Franklin (1878-1931):
Born in Rockhampton, New South Wales, she married William John Wise in Sydney, NSW in 1903. Sometime after that they moved to New Zealand where she lived in Masterton, Wellington, until she died in 1931.
William John Wise?(1871-1960):
He?was born in Chertsey, Surrey, England. Nothing else is known about William, when did he move to Australia, when did they move to New Zealand? He died in 1960 in Masterton, New Zealand.

Does anyone out there know any more?

I will look at Alfred Parkes Nickisson's life in Australia in the next Blog.

Doesn't time fly: My grandmother wanted to stay fit, she started walking five miles a day when she was 60. She's 97 today and we don't know were the hell she is.

3)??Growing Australian roots: Including how the allotment is going in England

Talking to my daughter Joanne and grandson Joseph, they have had a bumper crop of fruit, flowers and vegetables from the allotment in England. Although the weather has been very mixed, almost everything has been successful. It seems as though the only failure has again been the Broccoli, not to be tried again next year.

The grapes have again grown well in the greenhouse along with the Tomatoes, Peppers, Chilli plants and the Cucumber. They have also had a success with growing flowers (Sweet Peas) for the first time.

Most of the produce is now out of the ground and the beds are being prepared for winter. Some late potatoes have been planted, hopefully ready for Christmas.

What about Australia. Well, I have identified an area in our new home for a vegetable patch, I don't mean in the home, in the garden of our new home!!!! I will also attempt to grow Dwarf varieties of fruit trees around the garden. Looking forward to having a go at creating my version of an allotment, although on a smaller scale than in England.

And finally:

Doesn't Time Fly??Three tourists climbed up London's Big Ben tower and decided to throw their watches off the top, run down the stairs and try to catch them before they hit the ground.?

The first tourist threw his watch but heard it crash before he'd taken three steps.?

The second threw his watch and made only two steps before hearing his watch shatter.
?

The third tourist threw his watch off the tower, went down the stairs, bought a snack at a shop up the street
and walked slowly back to Big Ben in time to catch the watch.

"How the heck did you do that???" asked one of his friends.

"Easy," he replied.

.
.
.
.
"My watch is 30 minutes slow."

Speak to you soon.

Variable Annuity Investing : FinanceCategory.com

Annuity

Here are the basics of investment. In order to profit when investing, you must balance the risk of big losses over the chance of the highest possible returns. It?s sort of like gambling, in a sense. You can?t win big if you aren?t willing to risk big, but if you risk too much, you may end up with nothing at all. However, this balance between wins and losses was eventually thrown into a loop in the last few years thanks to the wild ?mood swings? of the financial markets and the adverse impact of the economic slowdown. This has made investors shaken and a lot more cautious. As a result of their wariness, these guarded investors are now investing part of their retirement assets in variable annuities.

?Is Investing in Annuities a Sure Thing?

The reason for this increase in annuity investment by investors? particularly retirees? is because an annuity enables people to hand a lump sum to the insurer in order to receive a guarantee of periodic payments that will last as long as they?re alive.? Annuities of the variable variety are tax-advantaged, which means your investment will have less tax deductions when compared to ?traditional? investments. It?s a way to invest in bond, stocks, or others funds without getting ?punished? too much with taxation. What?s more, by paying an extra fee, you will also receive the guarantees of a lifelong minimum income paid out to you even after your underlying funds have already been spent.

However, many critics of a variable annuity allege they are too expensive and not worthwhile. They have too many high fees which will eat away at the funds of annuity investors (otherwise known as annuitants). Besides which, there exists more favorable investment options that could provide investors with relatively the same favorable tax treatments without the exorbitant costs found in variable annuity investments. On that note, investment experts that are pro-annuity allege that annuities are worth the costs because they are a lot more secure when compared to other investment schemes that are susceptible to the whims and conditions of the worldwide economy.

The Case for Variable Annuity Investments

Annuity proponents further claim that no other investment can protect its investors (while also providing them the opportunity to earn a lot more than nominal investment returns) quite as well as the annuity scheme. This is the reason why annuities are highly prized and highly expensive, they say; the expensiveness is offset by the myriad of possible profits and benefits. Many financial consultants out there can vouch for how good an investment the variable annuities are.? Then again, people jumping on variable annuity bandwagon should keep in mind that there are times and certain circumstances when variable annuities aren?t that great of an investment at all.

Because of the fear factor in financial markets at this point, it?s understandable why investors view variable annuities as the safer bet. To be more specific, today is the best time to purchase annuities because they?re uniquely equipped to address the uncertainty of financial markets at present with terms that will keep many an investor?s heart at ease. This is the kind of market wherein annuities can flourish. The market gyrations and the plunging of share prices since the turn of the millennium has practically driven investors into investing part of their assets into annuities despite their cost.

Many investors invest in variable annuities because they don?t want to end up as retirees who ration out their dwindling savings at a time when they?re already too old to hold a job. In addition, annuities offer a package of attractive features and benefits that are unique to it; these attributes cannot be found (in combination) in any other investment plan. For example, there?s a guarantee of lifetime minimum withdrawals attached to this payment arrangement. Regardless of what happens to financial markets and their unpredictable trends, investors are guaranteed by contract to receive compensation annually as long as they live.

Investors also have the power to choose an assortment of death benefits in order to safeguard their investment?s values for their heirs and next of kin. Of course, annuity detractors are quick to point out that these benefits come at a cost. Proponents say nothing is free and the higher fees are worth it. To be more specific, annuities serve as the calming balm to all the fears investors have about losing all their hard-earned money because of the unfavorable economy.

Anti-Putin protest draws tens of thousands

MOSCOW (AP) ? The first major protest against President Vladimir Putin after a summer lull drew tens of thousands of people, determined to show that opposition sentiment remains strong despite Kremlin efforts to muzzle dissent.

The street protests broke out after a December parliamentary election won by Putin's party through what observers said was widespread fraud, and they grew in strength ahead of Putin's effectively unopposed election in March to a third presidential term.

Huge rallies of more than 100,000 people even in bitter winter cold gave many protesters hope for democratic change. These hopes have waned, but opposition supporters appear ready to dig in for a long fight.

"We have to defend the rights that we were deprived of, the right to have elections. We were deprived of honest elections and an honest government," opposition activist Alexander Shcherbakov said. "I've come to show that and to demonstrate that the people are opposed. I'm opposed to the illegitimate government and illegitimate elections."

Leftists, liberals and nationalists mixed with students, teachers, gay activists and others as they marched down Moscow's tree-lined boulevards chanting "Russia without Putin!" and "We are the power here!" Many wore the white ribbons that have become the symbol of the protest movement.

About 7,000 police officers stood guard along the route of the march, and a police helicopter hovered overhead. A protest rally, held on a wide street named for the late Soviet dissident Andrei Sakharov, remained peaceful as it stretched into the evening. As the 10 p.m. deadline neared, a couple of hundred people were still on the street and police herded them toward a subway station. One of the opposition leaders, Sergei Udaltsov, was detained along with a handful of his supporters when he tried to lead a group of about 50 on a new protest march.

Putin has shown less tolerance for the opposition since his inauguration in May. New repressive laws have been passed to deter people from joining protests, and opposition leaders have been subject to searches and interrogations. In August, a court handed down two-year prison sentences to three members of the punk band Pussy Riot for performing an anti-Putin song inside Moscow's main cathedral.

Big balloons painted with the band's trademark balaclava masks floated over the crowd on Saturday, while some rally participants wore T-shirts in support of Pussy Riot.

Many demonstrators targeted Putin with creative placards and outfits. Some mocked Putin's recent publicity stunt in which he flew in a motorized hang glider to lead a flock of young Siberian white cranes in flight.

One protester donned a white outfit similar to the one worn by Putin on the flight with a sign reading: "Give up hope, each of you who follow me." Another person held a placard that said: "We are not your cranes."

Alexei Navalny, a charismatic anti-corruption crusader and a popular blogger, remains the rock star among the protest leaders. When he took the stage, young people in the crowd held up their phones to record the moment.

Navalny urged the demonstrators to show resolve and keep up the pressure on the Kremlin with more street protests.

"We must come to rallies to win freedom for ourselves and our children, to defend our human dignity," he said to cheers of support. "We will come here as to our workplace. No one else will free us but ourselves."

The rally appeared as big as the last major protest in June, which also attracted tens of thousands. More of the demonstrators, however, came not as members of the varied political organizations that make up the protest movement, but with groups of friends and co-workers, some of them organizing on social networks.

As part of a new initiative, activists collected contact information and addresses from demonstrators to make it easier to organize civic actions on a neighborhood level.

Gleb Pavlovsky, a former Kremlin political consultant, who attended Saturday's rally, estimated that up to 500,000 people have taken part in the protests in Moscow, a city of 11.5 million.

He said the Kremlin has not figured out how to deal with the protest movement.

"Therefore, they alternate between taking tough action and stepping back from confrontation," Pavlovsky said. "For the Kremlin, it is very worrying that Moscow no longer supports Putin, but it is very important that this is purely a Moscow phenomenon."

Although opposition protests also were held Saturday in several other Russian cities, the largest, in St. Petersburg, drew only a few thousand people. Protests elsewhere attracted only hundreds or even dozens. About 100 attended an unsanctioned rally in Nizhny Novgorod and about 20 of them were detained.

The Moscow organizers had spent days in tense talks with the city government over the protest route for Saturday, typical of the bargaining that has preceded each of the opposition marches.

A protest on the eve of Putin's inauguration ended in clashes with police, and the Kremlin responded by arresting some of the participants and approving a new draconian law that raised fines 150-fold for taking part in unsanctioned protests. The city, however, granted permission for the subsequent opposition rally in June, which was peaceful.

A day before the weekend rally, parliament expelled an opposition lawmaker who had turned against the Kremlin and joined the protest movement. Anger over the ouster of Gennady Gudkov may have helped to swell the ranks of the protesters.

"Russia no longer has a constitution," Gudkov told the rally. "Russia no longer has rights, and Russia no longer has a parliament worthy of respect. Shame on this parliament, and shame on this government!"

Gudkov's expulsion also means he loses his immunity from prosecution, and his supporters fear he could face arrest.

His son, Dmitry Gudkov, also a lawmaker, said he hopes the Kremlin will think twice about arresting his father after seeing the size of the protest. "They will either have to think about serious reforms and end their repressions, or they will come to a very bad end," he said as marched with a column of protesters.

"It's necessary right now for all Russians to come out into the streets to show the regime that changes are needed in our country, and that without them our country can't develop," said teacher Valentina Merkulova, who participated in Saturday's protest. "The most important thing is that, the more Russians come out, the less bloody the change of regime, the change of power. A change of power is necessary."

Case Involving Cancer Patient And Nissan Dealership Takes ...

On the surface, it seemed like Jill Colter had a slam-dunk case against a Nissan dealership she had accused of firing her because she had stage 4 cancer. Judges and juries, faced with such a sympathetic plaintiff versus a corporation, tend to favor the afflicted.

But after the case went to trial, a Massachusetts judge not only found in favor of the dealership, she ruled that Colter's brothers had run a defamatory social-media smear campaign against the dealership that resulted in millions in lost business. She awarded Clay Nissan in Norwood, Mass. $1.5 million.

Protestors had picketed the dealership following her firing in June. Her brothers, Adam and Jonathan Colter, helped organize the boycott of the dealership. A dealership depends on a small market areas in the community in which it operates, so the bad publicity was devastating. Colter had been employed for 10 months with the dealership as a service writer when she was fired.

In leading the boycott, her brothers, Adam and Jonathan Colter, contended that the dealership had a history of firing employees with health problems. In court, the brothers could never prove that charge. The judge made that failure to produce the emails a key part of her decision.

"Of great significance to the court, when pressed by counsel for Clay about his assertions that Clay had fired others because they had cancer, Adam Colter insisted that he had received e-mails from other employees of Clay who had informed him that they had been fired by Clay because they had cancer."

Judge Renee Dupuis of Norfolk Superior Court gave the Colter brothers a week to produce the emails, but they never did.

Next up was the issue of proving whether Colter was, indeed, singled out for firing because of her cancer. But employees at the dealership contended that Colter was difficult to work with and pointed to awkward interactions with customers as the reasons behind her dismissal. In a written statement that followed the decision, Clay Nissan said:

"We understand the anger on display about the incredibly emotional topic of the recent firing of an employee who has suffered from cancer. ... The truth of the situation reflects ? as you might expect ? a much more balanced and human story."
