Purchext Keeps Your Kids From Buying Beer With Their Allowance

purchext2Purchext, a new app/service that increases communication between parents, their youngsters and the purchases their youngsters make, is on display at TechCrunch Disrupt NY 2013. The concept behind the startup is a way for parents to approve purchases their kids are making. In reality, it works more like a way for kids to submit expense reports to their parents. For each purchase a dependent minor makes, they can scan the receipts with the Purchext app and those receipts are submitted to their parents for approval. If the parent approves it, the amount of money on the receipt will be released to the kid’s bank account that is connected to their Purchext account. In practical terms, the service can also be automated via a series of rules set up to filter purchases. I’m not going to say the concept is not “gameable” by the kids using it. Surely enterprising minors could figure out ways around this, or could forgo submitting those purchases altogether. However as a concept, it could still streamline allowances and keep many relevant purchases on parents’ radar.

Global shares rise on central bank expectations, euro also up

By Richard Hubbard

LONDON (Reuters) - European rose on Monday as investors counted on easy money from central banks in the euro zone and United States to offset the risk of further disappointing global economic data, which still kept commodities under pressure.

The common currency - which fell around 1.3 percent against the dollar last week as some traders priced in a possible interest rate cut - was also higher on expectations that the European Central Bank should not signal more drastic action when it meets this week.

The formation of a new government in Italy at the weekend, ending two months of political stalemate, added to the stronger sentiment with Milan's main stock index, the FTSE MIB <.ftmib>, gaining over 1 percent in early trade.

The broad FTSE Eurofirst <.fteu3> index of top European shares was up 0.4 percent, adding to last week's 3.7 percent gain, while Germany's DAX <.gdaxi> rose 0.6 percent and France's CAC 40 <.fchi> was 1.0 percent Higher.

However, activity across the markets was expected to be light with Japan closed for a holiday, China off until Thursday, and the ECB and U.S. Federal Reserve meeting later in the week.

Speculation is rife that the ECB will cut its main interest rate at its monthly policy meeting on Thursday, given recent weak economic data from across the region.

A Reuters poll of 76 economists showed a narrow majority of 43 expected a rate cut of 25 basis points, taking the ECB's refinancing rate to a record low of 0.50 percent.

"The ECB will probably cut the refi rate 25 basis points, but... this move shouldn't weaken the euro unless the bank drops hints that some more dramatic policy - like a negative deposit rate - is back on the agenda," said Anna Hibinio, a global forex analyst at JPMorgan.

The euro was up 0.35 percent to $1.3080 against a generally weaker dollar, but remained well below a seven-week high of $1.3202 hit on April 16 before traders priced in the rate cut speculation.

The dollar also dropped 0.2 percent to 97.88 yen, below a 4-year high of 99.95 set earlier in April after the Bank of Japan unveiled monetary stimulus plans.

The Fed is widely expected to keep its current pace of bond buying at $85 billion a month when the policy-setting Federal Open Market Committee announces its decision at 1815 GMT on Wednesday.

The uncertain outlook for economic growth, especially in the world's two big commodity consumers, the United States and China, kept oil and copper prices under pressure, although gold rose 1 percent as its recovery from recent lows continued.

Brent crude slipped 41 cents to $102.75 a barrel, after making its biggest weekly gain since November last week despite data showing the U.S. economy grew less than expected pace in the first quarter. U.S. oil was down 27 cents at $92.73 a barrel.

Gold futures, which often provide trading cues to cash gold, hit $1,472.20 an ounce before settling at $1,468.90 an ounce, up $15.30. Spot gold rose $6.70 to $1,473 an ounce.

PHOENIX (AP) - Extra-inning games seem to suit the Arizona Diamondbacks quite well.

The Diamondbacks improved to 6-0 in extra frames this season after beating the Colorado Rockies 3-2 in 10 innings on Saturday night. Cody Ross hit a long fly ball to center field that allowed A.J. Pollock to score from third base without a throw, and Ross' teammates sprinted from the dugout to congratulate him after Pollock crossed home plate.

Ross also tripled in a run in the first inning to give Arizona a 2-0 lead, three batters after Pollock hit a solo home run.

J.J. Putz earned the win with a scoreless top of the 10th to improve to 2-0. Pollock led off the bottom of the inning with a single off Edgmer Escalona (1-1).

With one out, he stole second base and went to third on a throwing error by Rockies catcher Wilin Rosario. The Rockies then intentionally walked Miguel Montero to have Escalona face Ross.

Ross hit a ball more than 400 feet to center and the Rockies had no chance to throw out the speedy Pollock.

"That guy has good stuff. He throws hard and has a good slider," Ross said of Escalona. "I was just looking for something out over the plate that I could get some good wood on and fortunately it got in the air and Pollock was able to score easily."

The Diamondbacks turned three double plays in the first five innings.

The Rockies loaded the bases in the first and fifth innings against Diamondbacks starter Wade Miley, but failed to score each time.

On the night of a garden gnome giveaway promotion bearing his name, Miley struggled with his control more than in any of his previous four starts this season. He lasted only 4 1-3 innings and threw 98 pitches, walking seven.

Miley walked four in the first inning, but got out of the situation with a double play and a strikeout.

"I just didn't have it tonight and that was pretty much the bottom line. I tried to battle through it but didn't have it," Miley said. "I was scuffling out there. I was lucky."

Rosario homered off reliever Brad Ziegler in the sixth, and the Rockies tied it 2-2 when Troy Tulowitzki singled in Dexter Fowler with two outs in the seventh.

Fowler had reached second on a hustle double, sliding head first and avoiding the tag. Tulowitzki was thrown out at second trying to stretch his hit into a double.

The Diamondbacks had a chance to take the lead in the seventh, but Gerardo Parra was stranded after he singled and reached third base on a wild pitch.

The Rockies had their best late chance in the eighth when Michael Cuddyer and Rosario singled to start the inning.

But Cuddyer was picked off on a throw the catcher, Montero, made to shortstop Cliff Pennington and Rosario was doubled off second base after straying too far off the bag on a line out to Parra in right field.

Cuddyer was incredulous at being picked off, and described the game as odd.

"I think that's a good word," Cuddyer said. "Sometimes it happens , unfortunately. You don't get the big hit and we didn't. We had a lot of opportunities to get it, but we just didn't come up with it."

NOTES: Diamondbacks shortstop Didi Gregorius felt soreness from the contusion on the right side of his head a day after being hit in the helmet by a pitch from the Rockies' Josh Outman in the seventh inning Friday. Gregorius did not play in Saturday's game. ... The Diamondbacks played a man short on their 25-man active roster on Saturday while deciding whether to make a roster move involving Gregorius. ... Turtle genome analysis sheds light on turtle ancestry and shell evolution

Apr. 28, 2013 ? From which ancestors have turtles evolved? How did they get their shell? New data provided by the Joint International Turtle Genome Consortium, led by researchers from RIKEN in Japan, BGI in China, and the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute in the UK provides evidence that turtles are not primitive reptiles but belong to a sister group of birds and crocodiles. The work also sheds light on the evolution of the turtle's intriguing morphology and reveals that the turtle's shell evolved by recruiting genetic information encoding for the limbs.

Turtles are often described as evolutionary monsters, with a unique body plan and a shell that is considered to be one of the most intriguing structures in the animal kingdom.

"Turtles are interesting because they offer an exceptional case to understand the big evolutionary changes that occurred in vertebrate history," explains Dr. Naoki Irie, from the RIKEN Center for Developmental Biology, who led the study.

Using next-generation DNA sequencers, the researchers from 9 international institutions have decoded the genome of the green sea turtle and Chinese soft-shell turtle and studied the expression of genetic information in the developing turtle.

Their results published in Nature Genetics show that turtles are not primitive reptiles as previously thought, but are related to the group comprising birds and crocodilians, which also includes extinct dinosaurs. Based on genomic information, the researchers predict that turtles must have split from this group around 250 million years ago, during one of the largest extinction events ever to take place on this planet.

"We expect that this research will motivate further work to elucidate the possible causal connection between these events," says Dr. Irie.

The study also reveals that despite their unique anatomy, turtles follow the basic embryonic pattern during development. Rather than developing directly into a turtle-specific body shape with a shell, they first establish the vertebrates' basic body plan and then enter a turtle-specific development phase. During this late specialization phase, the group found traces of limb-related gene expression in the embryonic shell, which indicates that the turtle shell evolved by recruiting part of the genetic program used for the limbs.

"The work not only provides insight into how turtles evolved, but also gives hints as to how the vertebrate developmental programs can be changed to produce major evolutionary novelties." explains Dr. Irie.

Another unexpected finding of the study was that turtles possess a large number of olfactory receptors and must therefore have the ability to smell a wide variety of substances. The researchers identified more than 1000 olfactory receptors in the soft-shell turtle, which is one of the largest numbers ever to be found in a non-mammalian vertebrate.

T-Mobile Forced to Change ?Contract? Terms | Maboot.com

Over the last several months, we have seen tons of changes being made in the cell phone industry. It all started when the cell phone companies decided to speak with government officials about the potential of illegalizing the jail breaking, or unlocking, of cell phones for use on another carrier?s network. They claimed that this was cutting into their business since they are essentially designing cell phones as a way to lure people into signing a contract with their company.

However, if someone could unlock the cell phone to where it would work with any carrier, they would have no incentive to switch carriers; thus hurting the manufacturing carrier?s company.

Then, we have seen numerous cell phone providers come up with some pretty aggressive plans as yet another way to persuade potential customers to go ahead and sign the contract with them. T-Mobile is the latest company to make a very aggressive offer that should appeal to a lot of cell phone users. They are now offering contract-free cell phone services, which is a great way to escape the thought of being stuck with a provider for two years if their service begins to decline over the course of the contract. Sure, T-Mobile is not the first cell phone service to offer month by month service, but they are the first with a big reputation.

However, T-Mobile is currently dealing with one major problem in relation to their new month to month plans. They had apparently been misrepresenting the cost of the phone and how the financing plans worked when someone would purchase a phone to use on their network. As a result, the Attorney General in Washington State has required them to make some major revisions.

Of the revisions T-Mobile is to make, ensuring that there is adequate information in the contract about the financing plan for the phone and having clear communication about the reprimands of cancelling the contract are two of the biggest issues T-Mobile is to work on. T-Mobile has also been ordered to pay in excess of $26,000 in attorney fees for the revisions.

Along with the revisions T-Mobile is required to make, they also have to give users an opportunity to cancel their current plans and return their cell phones for a full refund as long as they were purchased between March 26 and April 25 and are undamaged.

Huge elephant bird egg gets $101,813 at UK auction

LONDON (AP) ? A massive, partly fossilized egg laid by a now-extinct elephant bird has sold for more than double its estimate at a London auction.

Christie's auction house said Wednesday that the foot-long, nearly nine-inches in diameter egg fetched 66,675 pounds ($101,813). It had been valued at 20,000 to 30,000 pounds pre-sale, and was sold to an anonymous buyer over the telephone after about 10 minutes of competitive bidding.

Elephant birds were wiped out several hundred years ago. The oversized ovum, laid on the island of Madagascar, is believed to date back before the 17th century.

Flightless, fruit-gobbling elephant birds resembled giant ostriches and could grow to be 11 feet high (3.4 meters). Christie's says their eggs are 100 times the size of an average chicken's.

Putin denies he is returning Russia to Stalinism

MOSCOW (Reuters) - President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday he was not returning Russia to the era of Soviet dictator Josef Stalin and denied any political motive in the prosecution and jailing of opponents.

In response to a question from a liberal journalist at his annual phone-in, Putin said he saw "no element of Stalinism" in the country since his return to the presidency last May.

He said Russia must never return to the cult of personality, repressions and labor camps under Stalin, who controlled the Soviet Union for three decades until his death in 1953, but that this did not mean Russia should not have order and discipline.

"Nobody is putting anyone behind bars for their political views," Putin added in reply to a question about the jailing last year of two female members of the Pussy Riot protest group and the trial of protest leader Alexei Navalny on theft charges.

He said he was certain that Navalny, an anti-corruption campaigner and organizer of anti-Putin protests who could face up to 10 years in prison, would have a fair trial.

'Toggle switch' to burn fat identified

Apr. 23, 2013 ? For a long time, scientists have dreamt of converting undesirable white fat cells into brown fat cells and thus simply have excess pounds melt away. Researchers at the University of Bonn have now gotten a step closer to this goal: They decoded a "toggle switch" in mice which can significantly stimulate fat burning.

The results are now being presented in the journal Nature Communications.

Many people not only in industrialized nations struggle with excess weight -- but all fat is not alike. "Love handles" in particular contain troublesome white fat cells which store excess food. Brown fat cells are the exact opposite: they burn excess energy as the desirable "heaters" of the body. Scientists at the University of Bonn working with Prof. Dr. Alexander Pfeifer, Director of the Institute for Pharmacology and Toxicology, have spent years using animal models to explore how the undesirable white fat can be converted into sought-after brown fat. "In this way, excess pounds may be able to simply be melted away and obesity combated," says Prof. Pfeifer.

A kind of "trigger switch" spurs fat burning

The researchers have now decoded a "microRNA switch" in mice which is important for brown fat cells. Micro-RNAs are located in the genome of cells and very quickly and efficiently regulate gene activity. The researchers studied a specific microRNA: microRNA 155. The gene regulator micro-RNA 155 inhibits a certain transcription factor, that controls brown fat cell function. Surprisingly, Prof. Pfeifer and his team found that the transcription factor also regulates the levels microRNA 155 establishing a tight feed-back loop that works like a toggle switch: When the microRNA is highly expressed brown fat cell differentiation is blocked; conversely, if the transcription factor wins the upper hand, brown fat is produced at an increased level and this in turn boosts fat burning in the body.

In knockout mice, the gene for Micro-RNA 155 was silent

The researchers at Bonn University and their colleagues from the Federal Institute of Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM) and from the University of Regensburg worked with so-called transgenic and knockout mice in whom the gene for micro-RNA 155 was either increased or silenced. "The mechanism was already set in motion when the micro-RNA 155 was only halved in the mice," reports lead author Yong Chen, graduate student of the NRW International Graduate School BIOTECH-PHARMA. The mice then had significantly more brown fat cells available than did the control gro up -- and had even converted white fat cells into brown fat cells.

Clues to the causes of lipid metabolism diseases

The micro-RNA functions as an antagonist to the brown fat cells. "As long as enough micro-RNA 155 is present, the production of brown fat cells is blocked," says Chen. Only if it falls below a certain proportion does this brake let up; the blueprint for brown fat can be read and implemented by the cell -- the desired fat burners can develop. These findings help scientists better understand the causes of lipid metabolism diseases.

Hope for new therapies against obesity

The scientists at the University of Bonn see in their results a potential starting point for drugs to combat obesity. The researchers have clues to the fact that the results, if anything, can be transferred from mice to humans. Thus, for example, researchers in Leipzig found increased levels of micro-RNA 155 in significantly overweight patients. This corresponds to findings from animal models: A lot of micro-RNA 155 is associated with reduced fat burning. "However, we are still in the basic research stage," says Prof. Pfeifer. The path to suitable drugs is still a long one.

High-nutrition and disease-resistant purple and yellow-fleshed potato clones obtained

Apr. 24, 2013 ? The Basque Institute for Agricultural Research and Development, Neiker-Tecnalia, has created four new potato clones which are characterised by their high antioxidant content, their good production both in size and number of tubers, as well as by their resistance to the usual diseases of this crop. The clones were obtained by natural methods through crossing varieties from South America with commercial varieties used in Europe. The result was three clones of the purple-fleshed potato and one with a markedly yellow flesh. The attractiveness and nutritional value of these types of potato make them a product highly regarded by professionals in gastronomy and by the public in general.

The work of creating the clones is part of the Potato Genetic Enhancement Programme drawn up by Neiker-Tecnalia. The research was led by agricultural engineer Ms Raquel L?pez, being the basis for her PhD thesis, and was presented at the University of the Basque Country. The aim of this specialist was to find potatoes which brought together the features of the South American varieties (their colour, resistance to pathogens and their nutritional and organoleptic properties) with those of the commercial varieties employed in our latitudes and characterized by their high productivity.

The Neiker-Tecnalia researchers brought 37 varieties from the Centro Internacional de la Papa, based in Peru. These native South American varieties were crossed in the greenhouse with commercial varieties, using natural procedures. The selection of and crossing between individuals with the best traits has given rise to the four clones mentioned. For the moment, these involve advanced clones and not commercial varieties, as they are not registered at the Spanish Office for Plant Varieties (OEVV in the Spanish acronym) or the European Community Plant Variety Office (CPVO). The process of registering is a long one, lasting about 15 years.

The varieties imported from Peru have a very low productivity in our latitudes, both in size and the number of tubers. Nevertheless, with the process of crossing and selection, the final clones having acceptable productivity has been achieved.

Nutritional value and resistant to pathogens

The four clones obtained are characterised by the high presence of antioxidants compounds, making them very attractive from a nutritional perspective. The three purple-flesh clones contain a large quantity of anthocyanins ? a highly appreciated pigment in the preparation of high added value foods ?, while the yellow flesh variety have carotenes ? essential chemical components for the diet ? and in greater quantities than in the usual commercial varieties.

Resistance to diseases is another of the achievements. The four clones show certain resistance to the pathogens analysed, such as the potato virus Y, as well as the Pectobacterium atrosepticum bacteria, which weaken the vegetable and considerably undermine its production.

Researcher Raquel L?pez highlights the importance of taking into account the clones achieved. ?It is beneficial for European producers to have varieties of purple flesh potato that are adapted to the climatological conditions of this continent. Moreover, these varieties incorporate natural antioxidant compounds, which are nutritionally and visually attractive, both for restaurant professionals and for end consumers?.

States could force Internet retailers to collect sales taxes under a bill that overwhelmingly passed a test vote in the Senate Monday, April 22, 2013. (AP Photo/Paul Sakuma, File)

(AP) ? Tax-free shopping on the Internet could be in jeopardy under a bill making its way through the Senate.

The bill would empower states to require online retailers to collect state and local sales taxes for purchases made over the Internet. The sales taxes would be sent to the states where a shopper lives.

Under current law, states can only require stores to collect sales taxes if the store has a physical presence in the state. As a result, many online sales are essentially tax-free, giving Internet retailers a big advantage over brick-and-mortar stores.

The Senate voted 74 to 20 Monday to take up the bill. If that level of support continues, the Senate could pass the bill as early as this week.

Supporters say the bill is about fairness for businesses and lost revenue for states. Opponents say it would impose complicated regulations on retailers and doesn't have enough protections for small businesses. Businesses with less than $1 million a year in online sales would be exempt.

"While local, community-based stores and shops compete for customers on many levels, including service and selection, they cannot compete on sales tax," said Matthew Shay, president and CEO of the National Retail Federation. "Congress needs to address this disparity."

And, he added, "Despite what the opponents say this is not a new tax."

In many states, shoppers are required to pay unpaid sales tax when they file their state income tax returns. However, states complain that few people comply.

"I do know about three people that comply with that," said Sen. Mike Enzi, R-Wyo., the bill's main sponsor.

President Barack Obama supports the bill. His administration says it would help restore needed funding for education, police and firefighters, roads and bridges and health care.

But the bill's fate is uncertain in the House, where some Republicans regard it as a tax increase. Heritage Action for America, the activist arm of the conservative Heritage Foundation, opposes the bill and will count the vote in its legislative scorecard.

"It is going to make online businesses the tax collectors for the nation," said Sen. Kelly Ayotte, R-N.H. "It really tramples on the decision New Hampshire has made not to have a sales tax."

Many of the nation's governors ? Republicans and Democrats ? have been lobbying the federal government for years for the authority to collect sales taxes from online sales, said Dan Crippen, executive director of the National Governors Association. Those efforts intensified when state tax revenues took a hit from the recession and the slow economic recovery.

"It's a matter of equity for businesses," Crippen said. "It's a matter of revenue for states."

The issue is getting bigger for states as more people make purchases online. Last year, Internet sales in the U.S. totaled $226 billion, up nearly 16 percent from the previous year, according to Commerce Department estimates.

The bill pits brick-and-mortar stores like Wal-Mart against online services such as eBay. Amazon.com, which initially fought efforts in some states to make it collect sales taxes, supports it too. Amazon and Best Buy have joined a group of retailers called the Marketplace Fairness Coalition to lobby on behalf of the bill.

"Amazon.com has long supported a simplified nationwide approach that is evenhandedly applied and applicable to all but the smallest-volume sellers," Paul Misener, Amazon's vice president of global public policy, said in a recent letter to senators.

On the other side, eBay has been rallying customers to oppose the bill.

"I hope you agree that imposing unnecessary tax burdens on small online businesses is a bad idea," eBay President and CEO John Donahoe said in a letter to customers. "Join us in letting your members of Congress know they should protect small online businesses, not potentially put them out of business."

The bill is also opposed by senators from states that have no sales tax, including Sens. Max Baucus, D-Mont., and Ron Wyden, D-Ore.

Baucus said the bill would require relatively small Internet retailers to comply with sales tax laws in thousands of jurisdictions.

"This legislation doesn't help businesses expand and grow and hire more employees," Baucus said. "Instead, it forces small businesses to hire expensive lawyers and accountants to deal with the burdensome paperwork and added complexity of tax rules and filings across multiple states."

But Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., said the bill requires participating states to make it relatively easy for Internet retailers to comply. States must provide free computer software to help retailers calculate sales taxes, based on where shoppers live. States must also establish a single entity to receive Internet sales tax revenue, so retailers don't have to send them to individual counties or cities.

"We're way beyond the quill pen and ledger days," Durbin said. "Thanks to computers and thanks to software it is not that complex."

ZTE licenses Microsoft's Android-related patents

Just last week Microsoft added Foxconn's parent company to its growing list of licensees for patents it asserts are key to Android, and now ZTE has inked a deal with Ballmer and Co. as well. Now that the pact is in place, Microsoft says it's struck patent accords with roughly 20 hardware makers, and that 60 percent of phones sold with Google's open source OS are covered by such licenses. With HTC and LG already paying Redmond royalties for devices using Android, that leaves the likes of Google, Motorola and Huawei as the odd manufacturers out. If Motorola has its way, however, that won't change.

World shares up, yen slips after G20 accepts Japan stimulus

By Richard Hubbard

LONDON (Reuters) - The Japanese yen weakened toward 100 to the dollar on Monday and shares rose after the G20 accepted Japan's bold stimulus policies, helping to counter the gloom over the global growth outlook.

U.S. stock index futures also pointed to a higher open on Wall Street, where the focus is on quarterly corporate results and whether these suggest further weakness ahead.

In its communique after a two-day meeting, the G20 avoided any direct criticism of Japan's policies and appeared to accept the need to reflate the world's third largest economy as part of efforts to invigorate a shaky global economic recovery.

Major world central banks have been holding interest rates at rock-bottom levels since 2008 while pumping over $6 trillion into their banking systems through loans and asset-purchase operations with only modest success so far.

"The real issue of deflation in Japan has to be tackled before we can have a genuine global recovery," said James Bevan, chief investment Officer at CCLA Investment Management.

The G20's actions removed any remaining obstacles to further yen weakness, setting up a test of the symbolic 100 yen to the dollar level and boosting demand for Japanese stocks.

"Japan not only escaped criticism, but on the contrary won praise as a country that was fulfilling its global obligations," said Marshall Gittler, head of global FX strategy at IronFX.

"That is in effect the green light for the BOJ's easing, which we expect will push USD/JPY through the magic 100 number in the not-too-distant future - perhaps as early as today."

The dollar was at 99.75 yen, off an intraday high of 99.90 and just below a four-year peak of 99.95 hit on April 11.

The euro also rose against the yen, reaching 130.70 from around 129.98 late on Friday, near a three-year peak of 131.10 set earlier this month.

Against the dollar, the euro eased slightly to $1.3040 after touching a session high of $1.3130 on Friday. The euro, which failed to break above $1.32 recently, has been stuck in a $1.30/32 range for the past week.

ITALIAN RESOLUTION

European stock markets were on course for a second straight daily gain, helped up by a jump in Italy's blue-chip index after the country's long-running political crisis moved a step closer to resolution.

Milan's FTSE MIB index gained as much as 2 percent on hopes the re-election of Italy's 87-year old president Giorgio Napolitano would see a new government emerge within days, ending two months of political stalemate.

The broad FTSEurofirst 300 index was up 0.8 percent at 1,162 points at midday, while Paris's CAC-40 and Frankfurt's DAX were about 0.75 percent higher.

MSCI's world equity index gained 0.25 percent, in part due to the better tone seen earlier in Asia when Japan's Nikkei hit its highest level in five years as the yen weakened after the G20 statement.

In the debt market Italian 10-year bond yields dropped to near their lowest levels in two years at 4.08 percent in response to the political resolution, while safe-haven equivalent German bonds were steady at 1.24 percent.

Traders had not expected a big move in German bonds as the market is awaiting key surveys on European purchasing managers' activity in April, due on Tuesday. These are likely to show the euro zone remains mired in recession, increasing the chance of a rate cut by the European Central bank.

COMMODITIES SHAKY

In the commodity markets gold rebounded from its sharp sell-off last week, though sentiment remained shaky after the precious metal posted its biggest-ever daily loss in dollar terms last Monday.

The spot gold price rose more than 2 percent at one point to a high of $1,436.70 an ounce, well above the two-year low of $1,321.35 touched last week.

U.S. gold futures hit a high of 1,434.50 an ounce, up 2.8 percent from the previous close of 1,395.60.

Oil also rebounded, extending its gains into a third day as low prices brought buyers back into the market following sharp drops earlier in the month due to the worries about the growth outlook and its impact on demand.

Brent has lost 10 percent since the start of April as growth in the United States and China - the world's two largest oil consumers - slowed while recession in Europe deepened.

June Brent crude rose $1 a barrel to $100.65, while U.S. crude for June delivery gained 65 cents to $88.65 a barrel after a 3.6 percent loss last week.

"This is more bargain-hunting than anything else. People are getting back in the market, but that may not be sustained depending on the (economic) data this week," said Simon Wardell, an analyst at Global Insight.

Hollywood courts China

robert-downey-jr-china

The next time the Avengers assemble on the big screen, don?t be surprised if you see them touch down at some point in China. Given the rapid, almost Hulk-like growth of the film market in that country over the past few years, Avengers director Joss Whedon is half-expecting to get a call any day now asking whether he can set part of the superhero sequel in a Chinese locale. ?I?m working on the script right now, and if someone came to me and said, ?We?re looking into doing a chunk of this in China??well, I?d have to think about it,? Whedon says. ?China is on my radar. It can?t not be at this point.?

As North American movie theater owners gather in Las Vegas this week for their annual convention, CinemaCon, the state of the domestic movie business isn?t looking so rosy, with this year?s box office revenue running 12 per cent behind 2012 and 3-D ticket sales continuing to slide. But pan across the globe to China, and the picture couldn?t be more different. If America?s long love affair with movies seems to have cooled somewhat lately, China is in the first blush of a passionate new romance. How passionate? Put it this way: When James Cameron?s sci-fi epic Avatar opened in December 2009, there were only 13 IMAX screens in all of China. Today, there are 110, with some 140 more scheduled to open in the near future. ?When I go to China, people will ask me for my autograph,? IMAX CEO Richard Gelfond says, adding drily, ?That typically doesn?t happen in other places.?

With box office revenues rising 30% last year to $2.7 billion, China has now edged out Japan to become the second-largest film market in the world following the U.S. New movie screens are sprouting up across the country at a rate of roughly 10 per day, and some project that China could surpass the U.S. as the world?s top film territory within five years. It?s no surprise that Hollywood is eager to capitalize on that torrid growth as much as it possibly can. ?China is on most producers? minds all the time now,? says Barry Levine, producer of the sci-fi film Oblivion, which opens Friday. ?It is a giant market if you can reach it. But you have to play it smartly.?

Indeed, figuring out the smartest ways to reach Chinese moviegoers has become one of the film industry?s top priorities. For years, the biggest barrier for entering China?s film market was the quota on foreign-made films imposed by the Chinese leadership to protect its homegrown movie business. But that quota, which historically capped foreign releases at 20 per year, has now eased to allow an additional 14 films per year to open in China, provided they?re in 3-D or IMAX, formats of which Chinese audiences are particularly enamored. Further sweetening the pot, China has raised foreign filmmakers? share of Chinese box office receipts from 13% to 25%.

Still, for Hollywood studios, navigating the complex financial, political, and cultural landscape of China poses significant challenges. All films must be submitted to China?s State Administration of Radio, Film, and Television (SARFT), which enforces a strict code aimed at weeding out such taboos as sex, violence, religion, criticism of the Chinese government, and even such supernatural phenomena as time travel or ghosts. To get through this system of censorship, studios have shown an increasing willingness to tailor their films specifically for Chinese audiences. In the upcoming film World War Z, references to a global zombie pandemic originating in China were expunged for the Chinese market. In the case of the recent remake of Red Dawn, the army invading Middle America was changed from China to North Korea. Last year?s Cloud Atlas was cut by 40 minutes for its China release to remove offending scenes of sex and violence. Just this month, Quentin Tarantino?s Django Unchained was edited to soften some of its graphic violence and gore?yet still wound up being pulled from its release in China by SARFT for ?technical reasons? that remain unclear.

Where some see these concessions to state-sponsored censorship as incompatible with the values of unfettered speech and creative freedom Hollywood espouses, others see them as simply sensible business and good diplomacy. ?You have to be sensitive to Chinese tastes,? says IMAX?s Gelfond. ?China is the second-largest economy in the world, and the Chinese audiences really want to feel special. They want to feel like a movie was made for them, not made for someone else and exported to them. Increasingly if we want to succeed in China, we have to tailor [films] to their consumers? tastes.?

Those tastes don?t always line up perfectly with American moviegoers? preferences. Visually spectacular, effects-heavy action films based on globally recognized properties, such as superhero films or the Transformers franchise, tend to perform strongly in China, whereas films like Jack the Giant Slayer,?Oz the Great and Powerful, and G.I. Joe: Retaliation, which may be less culturally resonant with Chinese audiences, have fared less well. Sometimes, though, there are surprises that can be learned from, as in the case of The Expendables, which proved a sizable hit in China. ?They marketed The Expendables as a family film there,? says Oblivion executive producer Jesse Berger. ?You think, ?A family film? That doesn?t make sense.? But they did 15 different trailers that were targeted to different people: young and old, men and women. There was a kids? version and a version for people who were Dolph Lundgren and Stallone fans.?

Though conventional wisdom holds that comedy is the genre that fares most poorly abroad, Paul Feig, director of Bridesmaids and the upcoming female buddy-cop comedy The Heat, is hoping that, even there, the Chinese market may be starting to open up. ?I would love to crack the Chinese market,? Feig says. ?I am a big believer that comedy can bridge those [cultural] gaps. I?d like to be the United Nations of laughs.?

Google hands in average earnings as CEO Page talks up future

Google?s results came in near expectations on Wednesday with core revenues of $11 billion and earnings per share of $11.58. The numbers, which don?t include the company?s Motorola division, also showed a slight decline in Google?s ?cost-per-click? revenues which is a key barometer of the company?s advertising business.

Google share price was up about 1 percent in after market trading to $772. ?The company?s consolidated revenue, which includes Motorola and traffic acquisition costs, was $13.97 billion. Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters predicted $14.09 billion, and?earnings per share of?$10.66.

On an earnings call following the release of the results, CEO Larry Page talked up the company?s highly experimental products of the future such as driverless cars, the secret Google X lab and Google Glass. He said products like Gmail were at one time considered to be far from the company?s core search business, but eventually became everyday features. He also cited the fiber-to-home networks Google is unrolling in Kansas, Austin and Provo, Utah.

?That?s why we?re investing in what appear to be speculative products to you today,? said Page, adding in reference to Google Glass,??I get chills when I use a product that is the future?

Analysts on the call were not entirely persuaded, with one asking if the company would shift the resources it devotes to core versus experiment products. Page said the company would continue doing what it was doing.

In response to a question about whether Facebook?s Home screen for cell phones could marginalize Google software, Page did not address the issue directly but emphasized the company?s overall strength.

More highlights from the earnings and call coming soon.

Samsung Galaxy S4 accessories: Flip Covers, protective case and spare battery 'system' announced

S-View Flip Cover

Samsung knows you like Galaxy S4 accessories, announces a few more

If there is one thing smart phone enthusiasts like more than a new phone, it's accessories to go along with it. Samsung knows this, too, and has announced a few of the official Galaxy S4 accessories this morning. While it's not the complete list of things we saw leaked last month, a couple of the favorites should be available soon -- hopefully along side the device itself.

First up is the Flip Cover we all know and love, but redesigned to fit the S4 perfectly. Available in seven colors (Black Mist, White Frost, Light Blue, Pink, Green, Orange and Yellow), the Flip Cover will retail for $39.99. A new take on the Flip Cover is the new S View design (pictured above) which has a clear cover so users can see information like SMS messages or the current time. It's available in Black Mist or White Frost for $59.99, and it looks like a new software mode will work in conjunction with the cover to put the information you need front and center of the window itself. Samsung will also offer what they're calling the Protective Cover+. It looks like a high quality protective case, and comes in White, Navy, Green, Blue and Pink. It will retail for $29.99.

Beside the cases and covers, Samsung announced a Spare Battery Charging System. Checking in at $49.99, it consists of charging stand, a wall charger, and a spare 2,600 mAh battery. This sounds like a very good price for the dock and the extra battery, and is sure to be a popular seller.

Of course, plenty of the existing Galaxy S accessories will work just fine with the S4. Besides the obvious like headphones and wireless media devices, the Smart Dock and Universal Multimedia Desktop Dock will work for various Galaxy S devices, including the S4. See the full fact sheet after the break.

Mars Colony Project to Begin Astronaut Search in July

LONDON ??A nonprofit organization that aims to land four astronauts on Mars in 2023 will kick off its two-year, televised search for Red Planet explorers this summer.

The Netherlands-based Mars One will begin accepting application videos in July, charging a fee to weed out folks who aren't serious about their candidacy. The group hopes to raise millions of dollars this way, with the proceeds paying for the ongoing selection process and technology studies.

"We expect a million applications with 1-minute videos, and hopefully some of those videos will go viral,? Mars One co-founder and chief executive officer Bas Lansdorp told SPACE.com on April 10. He was in London to speak to the British Interplanetary Society (BIS) that day.?

Mars One now has 45,000 people registered for its mailing list and has already received 10,000 emails from interested individuals, Lansdorp added.?[Mars One's Red Planet Colony Project (Gallery)]

A one-way trip to Mars

Mars? One is casting a wide net, seeking applicants from all over the world. Application fees will vary from country to country, with folks from poorer nations getting a price break, Lansdorp said. The maximum fee will apparently be $25.

Anyone who is at least 18 years old can apply by sending in a video explaining why he or she should be selected. But prospective colonists must be prepared to say goodbye to Earth forever; there are no plans at this point to bring Mars One astronauts home.

By July 2015, Mars One wants to have 24 astronauts, organized into six teams of four people. Those teams then face seven years of training that will include spending three months at a time in a replica of the Mars colony.

"We will give them all the most stressful situations,? Lansdorp told the BIS audience on April 10, adding that the training base will have a 40-minute communications delay to replicate the time lag that would exist due to the vast distance between Earth and Mars.

Mars One officials expect some individuals and teams to fail these tests, so from 2015 on, the nonprofit will have an annual process to select 12 people (in three teams of four).

"We will always have about 10 groups [of four] in training, so if one group drops out, there will be replacement crews," Lansdorp told SPACE.com. This will continue even after 2023, because Mars One plans to send more colonists to the Red Planet every two years for as long as funding levels will allow.

Interplanetary 'Big Brother'

Mars One estimates that it needs $6 billion to send the first four astronauts to Mars. This money will cover developing the landing systems, habitats, Mars Transit Vehicle (MTV), rovers, solar arrays and other technologies associated with the colony, as well as pay for the crew's journey from Earth.

Every subsequent crew trip would cost $4 billion, Lansdorp told SPACE.com. Just sending a supply lander would cost $250 million.

Mars One plans to raise this money largely through a global reality television series that will follow the colonization effort from astronaut selection to the first landing and the settlement?s expansion.

The audience will vote for who gets to go to Mars from a pool of candidates selected by Mars One?s experts. Lansdorp points to the 2012 London Olympics and the $4 billion it generated from television revenues over its three weeks as evidence that such a funding plan can work.

Meanwhile, the application video revenue will finance early technology studies and prove there is demand for a television show. ['Big Brother' on Mars? (Video)]

?We can prove to the broadcasters that there is real demand and interest, and we will start negotiations after the [astronaut] selection procedure begins,? Lansdorp told SPACE.com.

Beyond the applicant videos and television show, future revenues include crowdfunding, exploiting the technologies developed for Earth?s markets and doing research on Mars for governments. For example, Mars One could eventually send samples of Martian soil to Earth, officials say.

Mission details taking shape

While the Mars spacecraft has yet to be designed, Lansdorp told the BIS audience that for the 210-day journey, the vehicle would have a hollow 660-gallon (2,500 liters) water tank with four compartments.

Astronauts would sleep in this area and use it as shelter from extreme solar radiation events. The water equates to a 9.84-inch (25 centimeters) column for radiation protection, which Lansdorp told the BIS is what NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA) suggest for a return mission.

When the first team of four lands at the settlement?s location on April 24, 2023, the settlers will find a colony whose habitats and solar arrays started working before they left Earth. Lansdorp told SPACE.com that the colony will be located between 40 and 45 degrees north latitude.

"We want to be as south as possible for sunlight and north enough for water," he said, adding that the colony would be at a location that is 1.55 miles (2.5 kilometers) lower than Mars? average ground level, to give the arriving spacecraft more time to land.

The colony will initially have rovers, two habitats, two life support landers and two supply landers. Mars One is designing five types of landers for life support, supplies, habitat and those that land the crew and rovers. The first equipment to be sent to Mars will be a communications satellite, a demonstration rover and a 5,500-pound (2,500 kilograms) supply lander, officials said.

"We have a conceptual rover right now. It is very likely there will be two rovers ? one trailer rover and one intelligent rover that does all the advanced tasks,? Lansdorp told SPACE.com. The trailer rover will move landers from their landing point to the settlement, a distance not expected to exceed about 1 mile (1.6 km).

The colony?s habitats will be connected by fabric tunnels and covered in 6 feet (1.8 m) of Martian soil, to provide radiation protection. Lansdorp told the BIS audience that with the colony?s expected outdoor activities, the colonists will get a radiation dose over 10 years equal to that of ESA?s maximum allowed for its astronauts, which he described as ?very safe."

At the same time the first team lands, the second crew?s habitat lander will also arrive. As well as being ready for the second crew's 2025 arrival, this habitat can be used by the first crew if they encounter problems with their own equipment.

The colony will have inflatable greenhouses and use water from the Martian soil and nitrogen from the atmosphere to grow crops. The crew will cultivate rice, algae and insects for their high protein content and will also likely grow mushrooms, along with tomatoes and other plants. [The Boldest Mars Missions of All Time]

Tapping private industry

Solar rather than nuclear power will be used for the base, Lansdorp said, and all the landers may be larger versions of SpaceX's Dragon spacecraft.

?We?ve discussed upscaling of Dragon capsule with SpaceX,? Lansdorp told the BIS audience.

In March, Mars One announced it had signed a contract with Paragon Space Development Corp. for a conceptual design study into life support and space suit systems.

Paragon has also been contracted by Dennis Tito for his Inspiration Mars project, which aims to launch two people on a Mars flyby mission in 2018 that will neither land on nor orbit the Red Planet. Lansdorp is slated to meet Tito in May in Washington, D.C.

As well as Paragon and SpaceX, Lansdorp is in discussions with Canada?s MDA Robotics for the rovers; Italy?s Thales Alenia Space for the MTV; ILC Dover, Astrobiotic and the U.K.?s Surrey Satellite Technology.

Lansdorp declined to answer questions about how much money Mars One has already raised, saying only that it's enough to start the selection process and to fund the Paragon contract. However, Mars One has named its first investors. Described as silver sponsors, they include Verkkokauppa.com, Finland?s second largest consumer electronics retailer, and Byte Internet, a Web hosting service.
