Report: Indian casinos revenue up slightly in 2011

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) ? A report says Indian casinos posted higher revenue in 2011 despite a weak economy.

The study, "Casino City's Indian Gaming Industry Report," released Wednesday, says that revenue rose 3 percent, to $27.4 billion.

Indian casinos account for about 43 percent of total casino gambling revenue, just slightly less than 45 percent for commercial casinos. Race track casinos account for the rest.

Indian gambling was slowing before the start of the recession in late 2007 due to legislation, regulations and court decisions. Alan Meister, the industry report's author, says restrictions include the types of games offered by Indian casinos, the states where gambling is permitted and other limits.

The report says the outlook for Indian gambling looks healthy because the economy is expected to continue improving, restoring consumer spending.

In addition, many tribes are upgrading, expanding and replacing casinos.

How To Be The Perfect Boyfriend | Meeting Girls On Metro

There is a lot I claim to know that I actually make up: How to pick up women; how you should have sex; how I should have sex. It?s all incoherent half-thoughts that I dribble onto internet paper and expect you take as gospel

(Do not stop taking what I say as gospel.)

However, there is one aspect of life that I am well-versed in, where I can truly contribute to the conversation utilizing real, first-hand knowledge.

Two of my past three roommates were women. Each time it was a one-on-one situation, just me and a female. I wasn?t sexing them good on the reg (or ever) but I basically lived the life of a domesticated, cohabiting gentleman. I?ve been watching, observing and taking notes all along. Which is why, despite being single, I can present to you my guide to being the perfect boyfriend.

Always suggest Thai food: It?s Friday and instead of going to dinner you two want take out. But your girlfriend doesn?t know what she wants. Pizza or Chinese or maybe even that Lebanese spot down the road if we?re feeling adventurous. Here?s a hint. She wants Thai food. I know it. You know it. But she doesn?t want to feel like you two are in the always getting Thai food rut. Preempt the conversation.

?I think we should get Thai food.?

?Really, are you sure??

Nod authoritatively. ?Yea.?

No women is ever upset she ate Thai food.

Know she will always want better kitchen supplies: I own a $150 7? Japanese steel knife that I use for everything: Mincing garlic, butterflying flank steaks, dicing root vegetables. Every couple of months I get it professionally sharpened. I take better care of this knife than I do my dog. Last weekend, I went to Bed, Bath and Beyond with my roommate.

?We don?t have any good knives.?

I looked at her

?But a knife for like if I want to??

I have no idea how that sentence finished because I walked to another part of the store.

I can do that, but you need to know there is always more and there can always be better. Every women will vehemently deny what I just said then spend Saturday at HomeGoods seeing what they have in stock. My advice here is common sense doesn?t matter.

We means me: Like in the aforementioned quote ?We don?t have any good knives.? I have a great knife. Also in this BB&B trip I was told ?We don?t have a potato masher.? I don?t have kids to make mashed potatoes for. I am an adult. When I want a potato I will bake it. You can?t take offense to this because it literally does not involve you?or anything that has ever happened in your life?in any fashion. Imagine she said ?I? and it?ll be so much easier to agree.

Champy!: Fun fact: A female has never been upset while drinking champagne. I don?t understand the concept (I drink bourbon whatever my mood), but you?ll never see a women having some to get over exes or unwind after a bad day at the office. No, champagne (Champs, Champy, The Bubs, et al.) is only consumed while happy. So always keep a bottle on ice. When thing get ugly, pour her and you a glass.

?What?s this?? (Wow, can you hear that accusatory tone? It?s not even real. I made it up.)

?We should celebrate. We?re lucky to have each other. That?s always worth a toast.?

Boom. Every argument ever can be ended.

Don?t fight reality: This isn?t a philosophical tome on your being in a relationship. No, it?s about not calling reality television stupid. Don?t say it?s sophomoric. You know how you love sports? Yea? And how you love those mic?d up, behind-the-scenes, 24/7 specials? Reality TV is that for all the things women love: Dating; being married to rich men; forcing your daughter to join a dance troupe; being Persian at a club. It?s the same shit. Watch with a newfound appreciation. Or bitch and continue to think NFL players forget they are on camera and dance after a sack because Britney?s on.

Always keep hummus and baby carrots in the fridge: ?Our reservations aren?t until nine. I know, I?m sorry. It was the earliest I could get.? As you feel that evil hunger stare, walk to your refrigerator and pull out some baby carrots and hummus. ?Here. We can snack on these.? Look how thoughtful?and health-conscious!?you are. But be careful. Do buy any hummus brand but Sabra. Women consider everything else inferior. It?s the Tampax of hummus.

Pretend you aren?t hungover: ?You are probably going to drink. A lot. At night. And sometimes that will coincide with things your girlfriend wants to do. Ugh. But being hungover for these fun canal hikes she planned is literally an affront, like you were never interested to begin with. So just fake it. It?s hard to be chipper, so if you need to, overdose on Advil and Red Bull. Yea, your heart and liver may give out in the long-term, but don?t you want to keep your girlfriend through the weekend? Relationships are all about sacrifice.

'Missing' Calif. couple found safe in Peru

LIMA (Reuters) - A young California couple feared by family to have been abducted while on a cycling trip through Peru have safely surfaced on a river boat headed for Ecuador, surprised to learn they were subjects of an international search, the Peruvian government said on Tuesday.

"The American tourists are continuing to enjoy their trip in the Peruvian Amazon," the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism said in a statement, adding that a national police official had spoken with the couple and found them to be "in good health."

Garrett Hand and his girlfriend, Jamie Neal, both 25, had last been heard from by friends and relatives about a month ago, according to co-workers and a statement issued on Monday by the U.S. Embassy in Lima, the Peruvian capital.

The embassy said then that Peruvian authorities had mounted a search for the pair, who are residents of Oakland, California.

The couple were said to have vanished while en route to Lima from Cusco, in the mountainous southeastern Peruvian interior near the ancient Incan city of Machu Picchu, an area where U.S. citizens have been warned by the embassy of kidnapping risks.

That advisory last month was widely interpreted as linked to efforts by a remnant band of Maoist Shining Path rebels to repel a government push to regain control of jungle valleys that are rife with coca cultivation and cocaine trafficking.

Friends and family of Hand and Neal said they worried the pair had been abducted and that their bank accounts had remained idle since they disappeared.

But a day after relatives and co-workers went public with efforts to organize a search for the couple, the Peruvian government said national police had caught up with the duo in the northern village of Angoteros along the Napo River.

SURPRISED BY CONCERN

The tourism ministry said the couple were passengers on a boat headed up the river, a tributary of the Amazon, to a town on the border with Ecuador.

The couple "were surprised by the concern generated by family, friends and the international community after the cessation of their communications in late January," a ministry statement said.

It added that the pair had been traveling overland by bicycle, bus and river boat through remote areas where access to telephones and the Internet was limited.

Meanwhile, Hand's mother, Francine Fitzgerald, posted a message on Facebook saying she had been informed by U.S. Embassy and Peruvian authorities that the couple were spotted in a remote village and were now on a river boat.

She gave few other details but said she would not be satisfied until receiving "proof of life" from her son.

"Proof of life is my son's voice on the phone and a picture of him holding the missing poster," she wrote.

ABC News reported on Tuesday that the tourism ministry was sending a crew with video cameras to the location where the couple's boat is scheduled to dock on Wednesday to show they are alive and well.

The U.S. Embassy issued a separate statement saying it was aware of "reports that the missing U.S. citizens have been located," adding, "we are working with local authorities to confirm those reports."

The location of the couple in northern Peru was reinforced by previous accounts from police and officials of an ecological community in the Amazonian region of Iquitos. They had told Reuters earlier this week that Hand and Neal were seen embarking on an upriver boat trip toward Ecuador on February 16, three weeks after their families had last heard from them.

Gold Vs Paper Currency: Why The Precious Metal Is Your Best Bet ...

Precious metals have been a popular investment since the economy went haywire back in 2008. While the value of the dollar has consistently eroded, the value of precious metals such as gold and silver has been rising inexorably. For thousands of years people have recognized that precious metals hold their value like no country's currency can. Precious metals also provide a great hedge against economic uncertainty. As financial uncertainty spreads worldwide people have found investing in precious metal provides them with a measure of financial stability and even allows them to turn a profit.?

Gold and Silver Have Intrinsic Value

There are a number of good reasons to invest in precious metals. Precious metals are physical commodities. They have value in and of themselves. They can be used as collateral or to purchase goods and services almost anywhere in the world. Things like currency, stocks and bonds are only pieces of paper and virtual goods. They may represent something of value, but they have no real value themselves. If the companies or governments that issued them fail they become worthless. Precious metals, on the other hand, retain their value regardless of what happens in the political/economic landscapes. The value of gold and silver can simply never go to zero.?

A Limited Commodity

Another reason precious metals are better than cash is because they are a limited commodity. There is a finite amount of gold and silver on the planet. This is part of the reason they are so valuable. True, companies mine for them every day, still they represent only a tiny fraction of the resources on the planet. Reams of paper money are printed in countries all over the world each day. When governments (or counterfeiters) want more money they simply print it. But there have been numerous instances where it took baskets of money to buy a loaf of bread. That has never been the case with precious metals.

Durable And Versatile

Gold, silver and other precious metals are versatile. They can be transformed into jewelry, used in industry, made into coins or bars and still keep their value. They are also able to hold their value when deluged by water, burned by fire or broken into pieces. The same cannot be said of paper currency. For paper money to have any value it must be in pristine or near pristine condition. Damaged bills are usually not accepted as legal tender. Paper money can also easily be rendered useless by flood, fire or a mischievous child playing with scissors. This makes it a more risky proposition to have your wealth in paper currency than precious metals.

Enduring Value

For thousands of years precious metals have been used as a means to pay for goods and services. During that time many forms of paper currency have become worthless. Many forms of paper currency today are theoretically backed by precious metals. It makes more sense to own the precious metal than the paper currency. Banking today is handled electronically. With a few strokes or miss strokes on a computer the life savings of millions of people can be gone in an instant. If people are looking for a medium of exchange that has stood the test of time precious metals is their best bet.

How to Invest

If you are now convinced that gold is something you'd like to invest in, the 1st step is to find a reputable gold dealer that can help you through the whole process of investing in gold. Do your research and look at different?gold dealer reviews on the web. It is recommended to work with a dealer that is in your area and that has some positive testimonials from other clients like you. Also, look for accreditations to make sure that the gold or silver you're purchasing meet the minimum purity requirements.

Investing through your IRA

One of the most popular ways of buying gold in 2013 is investing through your IRA or 401k retirement accounts. Many Americans don't know that this is possible, yet it is one of the best ways of investing in gold. Check out a site like goldiraguide.org to learn more. One of the main advantages of buying gold through your IRA is the tax-saving aspect. In fact, certain plans allow you to buy gold bullion coin or bars tax-free, as long as your gold is being held by an accredited custodian.?

This press release is available in Spanish.

U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and university scientists have found that cattle temperament influences how animals should be handled, how they perform and how they respond to disease.

The team of researchers looked at stressful eventssuch as weaning, transportation and vaccinationthat beef cattle experience during routine management practices. The researchers examined interrelationships of stress and cattle temperament with transportation, immune challenges and production traits.

Studies were conducted by animal scientist and research leader Jeff Carroll at the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) Livestock Issues Research Unit (LIRU) in Lubbock, Texas; associate research professor Rhonda Vann at Mississippi State University's Brown Loam Branch Experiment Station; animal physiologist Ron Randel at Texas AgriLife Research, The Texas A&M University (TAMU) System, in Overton; and endocrinologist Tom Welsh, Texas A&M AgriLife Research and TAMU Department of Animal Science, in College Station.

Between 24 and 36 calves were used for each study, depending on the trial. An exit velocity system, which measures the rate at which an animal exits a squeeze chute and crosses a certain distance, was used to select for temperament. A pen scoring system was used in conjunction with exit velocity to calculate an overall temperament score for cattle selected as the calmest, the most temperamental or as intermediate.

When challenged with a bacterial toxin, cattle showed dramatic differences in sickness behavior, depending on their temperament. The more temperamental animals failed to show behaviors that allow detection of sick animals, whereas calm animals immediately displayed visual signs and became ill. Studies also revealed that temperamental cattle did not have the same vigorous immunological response to a vaccine as less temperamental cattle in the same herd.

In related research, the team found that the main cause of stress for cattle was not transportation itself, but being handled and loaded into a trailer.

However, transportation duration and conditions were found to have negative effects on intramuscular fat or marbling, which is used for fast sources of energy by cattle being transported. Marbling determines the quality grade of beef. Lower levels of marbling reduce quality grade. Temperamental cattle have less fat stores, indicating that temperament makes a difference in the final quality grade.

ASUS PadFone Infinity vs. PadFone 2... fight!

ASUS PadFone Infinity vs PadFone 2 fight!

We happened to have a PadFone 2 with us at ASUS' MWC event, so it was only natural for us to put it next to the brand-spanking-new PadFone Infinity for a few photos. Unlike the jump from the original PadFone to the PadFone 2, the latest generation ditches the polycarbonate body with the iconic zen pattern in favor of an aerospace-grade aluminum unibody. Placing the PadFone Infinity and its shorter predecessor side by side you can see that the former is actually slimmer over all, and we dig the premium feel as well. Other notable differences include a new position for the loudspeaker, which is now on the top right side of the bezel instead of the back; and the 13-megapixel camera is now off-center.

You'd think the smaller PadFone 2 would easily fit into the bigger bay in the new PadFone Station (using the same special micro-USB socket), but interestingly, it didn't work for us. We might give it another go when we eventually get hold of a review unit, of course (it's OK, Jonney, we'll be gentle).

Brooks: GOP ?likely loser? in sequestration, suggests public reaction will lead party to cave [VIDEO]

On Friday?s broadcast of PBS?s ?NewsHour,? New York Times columnist David Brooks offered a particularly bleak prediction for Republicans in the pending sequestration battle.

With the March 1 deadline to?initiate?massive budget cuts looming, Brooks said there is very little movement on either side, and added that with Republicans down in public opinion, they?re likely to take the hit if they can?t broker an agreement with Democrats.

?There were a couple of phone calls yesterday, but that?s about it ? just phone calls,? Brooks said. ?I certainly don?t see any movement. As Mark [Shields] said, the polls show the Democrats will probably profit. The Republicans still feel trapped, though. They feel they gave up a big tax increase a couple of weeks ago, and they can?t give up another. And that?s sort of the asking price. And so they feel they have got to show they can cut spending. I personally think the likely loser in this is the Republicans. They?re less popular.?

?They?re associated with cut ? with government ? controlling government spending,? he continued. ?And they have basically got a problem. I think they need to show the American people that we like some government programs. We don?t like others. They need to be able to distinguish between the two. Unfortunately, when they embrace this, they are embracing a piece of legislation that makes no distinction between good government and bad government. It just cuts randomly across the board, and, worse, doesn?t even cut the things that actually create the debt problem, which is the entitlement programs. So, to me, this is both a substantive and political serious problem for Republicans.?

The Republican Party has long pledged spending cuts, Brooks said, but when an impasse occurs ? such as the 1995 government shutdown under former President Bill Clinton ? they typically take the hit from public opinion, and then concede.

?Listen, the Republicans have been doing this since 1995, since the government shutdown,? Brooks said. ?They make a big show. They tell themselves, we?re going to control spending. They do something sort of ham-fisted. And it ? when the public reaction, then they cave in, and they come with concessions. So it?s not like we have not been here before. I just wish they had a little smarter strategy. And if I could give them one piece of advice is, don?t worry about discretionary spending. When you are talking about cutting government, domestic discretionary spending, which is stuff for the National Institutes of Health and TSA, that?s small potatoes. They?re always focused on that, which is sort of the sympathetic popular stuff. Focus on the entitlement programs. But they are off doing the wrong thing, in my view.?

Pistorius' brother facing culpable homicide charge

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? The brother of Olympic star Oscar Pistorius is facing a culpable homicide charge for a 2008 road death, compounding problems for the family after the double-amputee runner was charged with premeditated murder in the Feb. 14 shooting death of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

Lawyer Kenny Oldwage said in a statement that Carl had been involved in a car accident "in which a woman motorcyclist sadly lost her life." He said that "there is no doubt that Carl is innocent and the charge will be challenged in court."

Carl Pistorius was already in court last Thursday, as his brother Oscar was facing a bail hearing, and will appear again at the end of next month.

Oscar Pistorius was released on bail Friday and his brother Carl was seen driving into the home of their uncle Arnold early Sunday in Waterkloof, an affluent suburb of Pretoria, the nation's capital, where Oscar is now staying.

The problems surrounding his older brother Carl are the latest twist in a case that has transfixed South Africa and much of the world. Sunday's revelation of the culpable homicide charge immediately created a stir.

"It's also doubly sad because it's involved with Oscar and his brother and all the family ? so they have double sort of trouble. So, not good," said Johannesburg resident Jim Plester.

Oldwage said that "Carl deeply regrets the accident" and that a blood test showed he was not drunk at the time. "It was a tragic road accident after the deceased collided with Carl's car."

He said the charges had initially been dropped, only to be reinstated later.

Oscar Pistorius was charged with premeditated murder, but the athlete says he killed his girlfriend accidentally, opening fire after mistaking her for an intruder in his home.

On Saturday, the family took steps to lower its profile on social media after someone hacked into the Twitter account of Carl. They cancelled all the social media sites for both Oscar's brother and his sister Aimee.

Carl has always been close to Oscar but was notably absent when their uncle Arnold, flanked by Oscar's sister Aimee, read out a first reaction to the shooting on Feb. 17, even though he was also on the premises.

The three-story house where Pistorius is staying with his aunt and uncle sits on a hill with a sweeping view of Pretoria. It has a large swimming pool and an immaculate garden.

The character of Pistorius also continued to take center stage. For many, it mirrors his public appearances as an articulate, well-spoken advocate for Paralympic athletes facing hardship. Witness statements backing up Oscar Pistorius as a down-to-earth guy were presented at the hearing.

Others have described him as a reckless risk taker who has been in trouble before, such as a boat accident in 2009 which put him into hospital intensive care unit.

On Sunday, a South African man who said Steenkamp had stayed at his home since September, described Pistorius as moody and impatient. Cecil Myers, whose daughter was close friends with Steenkamp, said in an interview published Sunday in the City Press newspaper, that Pistorius will have the killing of Steenkamp on his conscience. "I hope he gets a long sentence. Gets what he deserves," said Myers.

"Very nice and charming to us when they started dating," said Myers. Myers said Pistorius initially used to come into the house but later just dropped Steenkamp off and picked her up when they began to date steadily, and he described the change as a lack of respect.

Myers recalled their first date and told the newspaper: "After that he wouldn't leave her alone. He kept pestering her, phoning and phoning and phoning her."

According to Myers, Steenkamp "told me he pushed her a bit into a corner. She felt caged in."

Myers said he told Pistorius "not to force himself on her. Back off." He said that after initially agreeing with him, it appeared that Pistorius soon took no heed.

Pistorius was born without fibula bones due to a congenital defect and his legs were amputated when he was 11 months old. He has run on carbon-fiber blades and was originally banned from competing against able-bodied peers because many argued that his blades gave him an unfair advantage. He was later cleared to compete. He is a multiple Paralympic medalist, and won a silver medal at the 2011 Daegu world championships with South Africa's 4x400 relay team. But he failed to win a medal at the London Olympics, where he ran in the 400 meter race and the 4x400 relay race.

Authorities: Report of gunman at MIT was a hoax

BOSTON (AP) ? Authorities say a report of a gunman on the Massachusetts Institute of Technology campus was a hoax and there is no threat to public safety.

Cambridge police said Saturday that officers searched for a man reported to be carrying a long rifle and wearing body armor but found nothing. A spokeswoman says the university called off a campus-wide lockdown.

State police spokesman David Procopio says the report of a gunman turned out to be a hoax.

Spokesman Dan Riviello says Cambridge police received the tip in an electronic chat message, but witnesses on the scene eventually contradicted it.

About 11,000 people attend the prestigious school outside Boston where students are famous for their smarts as well as their stunts, including once putting a police car on top of a domed campus building.

Zeitgeist: Noted Life Coach Offers Advice to Waived Rick DiPietro

A suddenly famous self-help guru reaches out to Rick DiPietro to boost his confidence during a tumultuous time.

Brian O'Reilly, the father of unsigned Avalanche center Ryan O'Reilly and a noted man of letters, sent Lighthouse Hockey an email today. It was a heartfelt response to the news that the Islanders had placed Rick DiPietro on waivers and the senior O'Reilly wanted to give his advice to Rick and extend his best wishes toward him.

He gave us permission* to reprint that response here. Brian is a life coach, running his own business called Human Potential Plus. It has been lightly touched up for a couple minor spelling and punctuation things. Also, paragraph breaks were added so that it could be read by a human. But it reads as follows:

"I hope this finds you in good spirits. This is not about money or injuries or more injuries and never has been. As you know you don't build team based on dollars. You build a team on its Character. Rick, you are not a superstar based on skill or facial hair but Character. I know this for a fact the player you were yesterday will not be the player you will be tomorrow when your Character will continue to grow learn and thrive in Bridgeport .The world values it less and less, yet everyone is looking for those players that eat sleep and drink the game plus compete because they are intrinsically motivated for excellence by their Character. You are one of these Character players, Rick, even though you probably got hurt trying to do all of those things at once.

My children were raised in an environment of sport where Athletics was held up as something you do to develop your sense of Personhood, Qualities of-collaboration,Team play and most important the development of your Character. Unfortunately, I hear your Character was raised in the Boston area.

How many goals you give up in the last few minutes of a game or how many games you missed due to injury is not how you measure yourself. What was important was giving your best day in day out and your Leadership and Character were shown on a daily bases by treating doctors, nurses, surgeons and training staff well every time you saw them for a new procedure.

If my son was getting 95 in math, then he got hurt dropping a text book on his foot then came back and pierced his buttock sitting on a compass then came back and got a protractor stuck in his ear, then got a 65 and the rest of the students in the classroom mercilessly teased him to we would say that student has a tremendous amount of Character!

So when I looked at the New York Islanders (a team I admit I am not familiar with) and your 15-year contract l see well-prepared team, Willing to negotiate by looking at the necessity of Character and wanting to build a Longterm commitment to that Character.

Sure, it could lead to the absolute worst case scenario in which a player, signed to a lifetime deal, becomes so ravaged by injuries that he can never come close to living up to expectations while at the same time being utterly unable to attain a fresh start by taking his Character to another team. Following the example of your Character, other teams have signed similar unwieldy deals . but only the player with the highest Character can embody the most dire and depressing nightmares of all fanbases . It requires true Character to take the bullet for the entire league . Every fan of every team ought be thanking you and celebrating your surgically-repaired Character!

As a high-performance coach and I have been studying Character for a lot of years. Character, compete level , dedication, the love of the game,is what are the building blocks for dynasties. Not health or skill or talent or financial stability or the ability to bolster prospects with free agents - Character!

Everyone's character has to decide the value of their own character and the character of others by how they treat your character's character. It's as simple as that!

The New York Islanders I believe have treated you fairly. You have thirteen wonderful years with them. Where we go from here will be a matter of Character. And busses. Because that's how AHL players travel around.

Yours in Character,

Brian O'Reilly

PS: Remember: CHARACTER!

PPS: Do you have Lindy Ruff's e-mail address?

We thank Brian for his letter and will pass it along to Rick if we can.

___

*Not really. This is a hastily-written parody of the Denver Post story. I'm sure Brian O'Reilly has no idea who we are and, despite being the inspiration for this parody, is a man of Character.

Poke fun at the injuries, the contract, the beard, the losses. But very few players in the last decade or so have been as dedicated to the New York Islanders as Rick DiPietro. It didn't work out the way anyone wanted it to. Rick's body may have betrayed him, but he never betrayed the team. I wish Rick nothing but success in the future, wherever it is, and I hope to God this is the last thing I need to write about him.

Windows Azure Outage

The following line of code will ignore the expired SSL certificate exceptions. ?Put this line of code at the beginning of your WebRole.OnStart method and also in your Global.asax's Begin_Application method:

// Temporarily not care about Microsoft's ridiculous SSL certificate expiration.  ServicePointManager.ServerCertificateValidationCallback = (a, b, c, d) => true;

You can continue to use SSL endpoints to Azure Storage, including the Diagnostics configuration. ?The main problem you will face is deploying this code to the cloud because Service Management is down. ?If you were fortunate enough to setup Remote Desktop, you can remote into each instance and copy/paste deploy the solution.

To do this, you must create a cspkg by right-clicking on the Azure Project and selecting 'Package'. ?This will build a cspkg file for you and open the folder in Windows Explorer. ?Open the cspkg with 7Zip (or another zip utility) and then open the .cssx file inside this archive (should be the largest file). ?Navigate to the siteroot folder and copy/paste its contents into E:\sitesroot on your web role instances. ?Apply an application pool recycle in IIS and you should be up and running with the new line of code you added. ?I would *not* suggest an iisreset as this requires another service (World Wide Web Publishing Service) to be started before your application will work.

An even lengthier version of the delegate can be used to allow a one day grace period on expiration dates:

ServicePointManager.ServerCertificateValidationCallback = (sender, cert, chain, sslPolicyError) => { if (sslPolicyError == SslPolicyErrors.None) { return true; } else if (sslPolicyError == SslPolicyErrors.RemoteCertificateChainErrors) { var expDate = DateTime.Parse(cert.GetExpirationDateString()); if (expDate < DateTime.Now && expDate.AddDays(1) >= DateTime.Now) { // TODO: Warn about SSL certificate expiration. return true; } } return false; };

Please note: This delegate applies to *all* SSL certificate validations. ?Use with care.

UFC cutting Jon Fitch, others sends chilling message to fighters

The UFC pulled a surprising move on Wednesday, but it had nothing to do with a fight no one expected. Instead, the UFC gave the pink slip to several fighters, including one former title contender with an impressive UFC record.

According to MMAFighting, these fighters have been cut:

Jon Fitch
Wagner Prado
Mike Russow
Jacob Volkmann
Vladimir Matyushenko
Che Mills
Jay Hieron
Terry Etim
Paul Sass
Jorge Santiago
Mike Stumpf
Simeon Thoresen
C.J. Keith
Motonobu Tezuka
Josh Grispi
Ulysses Gomez

Though Fitch fought and lost to Georges St-Pierre at UFC 87, he is 1-2-1 in his last four fights and has a reputation for putting on grinding, slower-paced fights. Jacob Volkmann and Mike Russow have the same reputation. Santiago went 0-2 in the UFC, left and won one fight, then lost again over the weekend. After putting together an impressive run in the UFC, Grispi lost four fights in a row in the UFC.

Every one of the fighters is coming off of at least one loss. In the past, a fighter would worry about his job if he lost two fights in a row. However, MMA Junkie's John Morgan says the UFC is looking to trim its roster. With fighters coming over from Strikeforce, and the addition of the men's flyweight and women's bantamweight divisions, the UFC is going to have to make more tough decisions like this. Fighters have to win to keep their job.

Police: Gunman kills 3, himself in California

In the middle of a shooting spree that killed three people and unleashed terror on Southern California motorists Tuesday morning, Ali Syed told one of his carjacking victims to walk away, police say.

"Mr. Syed ... said, 'I don't want to hurt you, I killed somebody. Today's my last day. Give me your keys,' " Tustin Police Chief Scott Jordan told reporters.

According to preliminary accounts from police, Syed, 20, didn't intentionally spare another target.

Police say they believe Syed, a part-time college student, fatally shot a woman at his family's Ladera Ranch home before killing two other people -- including a senior citizen executed outside his vehicle -- and wounding three others as he fired a shotgun at Orange County motorists on the Costa Mesa Freeway and committed three carjackings.

The spree ended when Syed died after he turned his gun on himself as police approached on a road north of Tustin, authorities say.

The Orange County Sheriff's Department says it was called to the Ladera Ranch home, where Syed lived with his parents, on a report of shots fired about 4:45 a.m. PT.

A woman in her 20s was found dead there. Police said she wasn't related to Syed, but they didn't release her name, and they said they didn't know why she was at the home.

Syed left the home in his parents' SUV, police said. About 25 minutes after that police call and 20 miles to the northwest, Syed drove into a Denny's and Big Lots parking lot in Tustin, exited the vehicle and shot a driver in the back of the head, Jordan said.

The wounded motorist -- a man who was waiting for his son to carpool with him to work -- managed to drive away before stopping near an overpass, Jordan said. The victim was being treated Tuesday, police said.

That's when Syed, whose SUV had a flat tire, approached the man he would spare. Syed ran toward the man at a nearby gas station, took his keys and drove the pickup truck away without firing at him, Jordan said.

Catch the cat vs. DVD drive smackdown

An ingenious kitty has come up with a use for that aging DVD drive: It makes a great cat toy. At least, one feline found it to be utterly fascinating.

Check out this adorable tabby fighting a one-sided war against a manually opening and closing disk drive. (The video so far has had some 315,000 views on YouTube.) As the owner?s hand pushes the button on the tower-style computer, the drive slides open and the tech-savvy cat prepares to strike: It eyeballs its prey, slowly moves forward and then expertly jumps up and swats at the drive with its paw.

Sometimes one whack does the trick, but other times, it takes a triple kung fu karate chop to get the drive to slide shut.

DVD drive, you?ve been warned: Streaming video?preferably of cats?is where it?s at.

At least 10 civilians of eastern Kunar province were reportedly killed in an airstrike conducted during a joint Afghan and Isaf military operation the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The raid, which took place in the Shigal district, was condemned by Karzai, who expressed his condolences to the families and said the Afghan authorities would further investigate.

Host Omid Farooq examines the issue with this episode's guests:

Plowed In: Beaten Down by Happiness

Facebook has beaten me down. I scroll down the page and find more and more happiness. People are announcing relationships, engagements, marriages, kids, more kids, grand kids, beloved pets, exotic trips, great restaurants, photos of all of it to provide definitive proof, post after post.
I feel overwhelmed by all this joyousness.
Rants still pop up from time to time, but mostly it's all good, all healthy emotional equilibrium.
Depressing.
I spent four years in competitive high school hell. This is worse because it seems endless.
As a favor to me, someone please crash their bike. Or get into an argument. What happened to all the riveting toxic relationships?
Where is the pain, the frustration, the anguish? I need people to pitch in and help here. I can only provide so much suffering. The happiness quotient is way out of proportion.
And stop posting exquisite photos of yourself, not a hair out of place. Your perfect lives are proof God has lost interest.

Masked intruders raid Greek gold mining company

There has long been opposition to the prospect of a gold mine and processing plant being built at Skouries in the Halkidiki peninsula, with some residents objecting to what they say will be the destruction of the environment and of pristine forest in the area, leading to the loss of tourism and other local activities such as farming, the rearing of livestock and fishing. (AP) ? About 40 masked attackers raided the facilities of a prospective gold mine in northern Greece overnight Sunday, setting machinery and offices alight, authorities said.

A police officer said employees told them the intruders tied up two security guards and doused them with gasoline, threatening to set them on fire. One of the guards was kicked and sought hospital treatment for bruises and respiratory problems, while the remaining 10 guards employed by the company at the facility fled, the officer said on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to speak to the media.

The mining company, Hellas Gold, is 95 percent owned by Canadian mining company Eldorado Gold Inc. The Greek government has been eager for the foreign investment as it struggles through a deep financial crisis. But the dispute has led to frequent protests in the area, with tear gas and firebombs used and residents trading accusations with the company about heavy-handed reactions and the use of violence.

"Hellas Gold SA regretfully announces an unprovoked attack at its installations in Skouries ... Considerable material damages were done without ? fortunately ? loss of life. This incidence is an escalation of the attacks against us and is not surprising...The company takes for granted that it is supported by the majority of the locals in Halkidiki ... since it took charge of the mines, in February 2012, it tripled the workforce from 400 to 1,200 permanent employees," the company said in a statement released later Sunday.

"We do not understand these attacks ... we call on the authorities to defend legality and support any investment effort in our country, which is of crucial importance for its economic recovery," the statement says. It adds that the company's measures to ensure environmental safety exceed Greek and EU standards.

The attackers left the area on foot and placed logs on a road to delay firefighters, the officer said. Police believe the attackers used several getaway vehicles stationed some distance from the mine site, the officer said.

Police said they have detained 27 people for questioning early Sunday morning but all were subsequently released.

In a later statement Sunday evening, police said they have detained a further four persons and are looking for four more. They say they have also found a full face mask, a surgical mask and bloodstains. Forensics experts are examining evidence at the site.

Mine's supporters say that 1,200 jobs have already been created in an area that is especially hard hit by long-term unemployment. About 5,000 people also applied for an additional 200 jobs at the mine, said Giorgos Arvanitis, general secretary of the local miners' union.

"Who are they who come here and burn everything and threaten our lives?" Angelos Deliyovas, a mine employee told reporters Sunday. "We care for our livelihood and our lives. We have families and kids. The state should tell us what they are going to do about this."

"Tying employees with ropes and threatening (to burn) them, this is fascism. We will not let this pass by," says Arvanitis.

The Skouries project is the latest in a complex of mining facilities in the area. Hellas Gold holds mining licenses for an area covering 317 square kilometers (122 square miles) with proven and probable reserves of lead, zinc, silver, gold and copper.

Many see the foreign investment as vital to helping Greece emerge from its economic morass, where a quarter of the workforce unemployed and the economy heading into a sixth year of recession.

"Without the company, the game is over (for the local economy)," Deliyovas said. "Those who try to shut this project, they will find us on the other side."

Opponents also argue that unlike many other countries, the Greek state gets no royalties from mine concessions other than taxes and jobs. Concessions granted in 2004 for Stratoni, one of the Halkidiki mines that is currently operating and is near Skouries, are valid until 2026 and can be renewed twice for 25 years each time, free of charge.

Opponents say the new mine, which will consist of an open pit, tunnels beneath, and processing plant, will destroy the forest and contaminate groundwater. The company rejects these claims, saying it will refill and replant the open pit once the ore has been extracted, and that all necessary care is being taken not to pollute the environment.

"We (the employees) live here; we are the first ones who want to protect the environment," Deliyovas said.

Eldorado Gold did not immediately respond to requests for comment or details about the raid.
